Job Description
The Virginia Tech College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, www.cals.vt.edu, consisting of ten (10) academic units, eleven (11) agricultural research and extension centers (ARECs), Virginia Cooperative Extension with 107 county and city offices, and six (6) 4H Centers, invites applications for the position of Director of Information Technology. Under the direction of the Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the Director provides managerial leadership and expertise in strategic technology management to enhance the growth and effectiveness of the College's information technology services.
The Director will be responsible for providing leadership and expertise to the strategic planning, development and deployment of technology solutions for the College. The successful applicant will provide oversight to network infrastructure, web application development, and educational technology applications as well as user support services for on and off campus programs throughout the state. The Director will coordinate with the Division of IT and serve as a resource to on campus and off campus IT support professionals. The successful applicant will actively participate in college strategic planning, resource management and college IT policy development and deployment, as well as representing the IT interests of the college at the university, regional, and national levels. The current department is comprised of 15 full time employees.
Required Qualifications
Earned Master's degree in an applicable discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Significant working knowledge and expertise in multiple areas of information technology. Demonstrated potential to translate the College vision and strategic plan into development and implementation of solutions in support of the instructional, research and extension missions of the college. Proven analytical, interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to manage and oversee complex projects in a fast-paced and dynamic technology and research environment. The successful candidate must be able to communicate on a variety of levels with faculty, staff, and administration regarding complex technology solutions while serving as an integral member of the College’s leadership team. Experience in the direct supervision, leadership, and development of information technology professionals. Expertise with successful budget development and financial management. Knowledge and understanding of issues involved in providing client services to multiple sites with diverse needs.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge and understanding of the broader Land-Grant mission; Demonstrated expertise addressing issues affecting faculty and the IT needs of a dynamic instructional, research and extension program; Knowledge of higher education administration and the development of policy in higher education environments; Working experience in network infrastructure, application and dynamic web application development, desktop IT support, server and data storage management, and fundamentals of cloud computing.
