WHO WE ARE: Established locally in 1911, Volunteers of America Northern California & Northern Nevada (VOA NCNN) is one of the region's largest providers of social services. Our professional staff operates more than 40 locally managed and delivered programs. Services include food and shelter, counseling, independent living and parenting skills, substance-abuse treatment and rehabilitation, and job training. Every night VOA NCNN provides shelter or housing to over 3,500 men, women, and children.

PROGRAM AND LOCATION: VOA Veteran Services is recruiting a full-time Support Staff to work on the GPD team. VOA's Transitional Housing for Veterans program assists veterans in increasing their income, moving into permanent housing, and accessing medical, dental, mental health, and other services. The program offers 80 beds for both men and women for an average length of stay of six months as they work towards removing the barriers they face to allow them placement in permanent housing as rapidly or as appropriate for their needs and progress. Full-time employees (working 30 or more hours a week) are eligible for a benefits package that includes paid holidays, vacation, health, dental, vision, life, and short-term disability insurance coverage.
POSITION SUMMARY: The Shelter Support Staff is responsible for assuring quality service in a safe, non-judgmental manner to all program participants compassionately and professionally as it relates to the specific program objectives. Objectives include supportive interaction with program participants and team members, assessment of participant’s needs, supporting the safety and integrity of all residents, and performance of all work duties as required. Work is performed in a cost-effective and service-oriented manner as it relates to established organizational standards.
OBJECTIVES/ACTIVITIES:
A. Responsible for performing daily work requirements to achieve established objectives of the program.
1. Explain program requirements and regulations to new guests and assure compliance.
2. Continually reorients guests to rules, rights, and responsibilities.
3. Coordinate meal preparation/service, room assignments, and other daily routines.
4. Provide “awake” shift coverage and maintain grounds security at all times. Conduct hourly safety and security checks during designated periods.
5. Provide emergency assistance to guests and co-workers as necessary.
6. Perform housekeeping and other maintenance tasks as needed, i.e., change light bulbs, plunge a toilet, clean up accidents/messes, etc.
7. Prepare for new guests, including sanitizing beds and sleeping areas.
8. Cleaning and sanitizing of all common areas, including restroom and laundry areas and staff areas, both indoors and outside.
9. Assures toiletry and cleaning supplies are stocked and secured.
10. Address any behavior issues that create disharmony, criminal, or otherwise non-productive behavior.
11. Takes pertinent guest issues to the Case Management team.
12. Positive role model, professional behavior including appearance, and communication with others.
13. Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.
B. Responsible for all areas of daily program maintenance in compliance with company policies.
1. Complete all shift logs, observation logs, and incident reports.
2. Document and notify management of guest concerns, potential workflow problems and/or any exceptions to policies that can affect program security or safety.
3. Adhere to work schedules to provide adequate/safe staffing coverage and to accomplish program objectives.
4. Maintain a working knowledge of fire, safety, and health standards to assure a safe work environment for guests and all personnel.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or equivalent required. This position requires the demonstrated ability to communicate and comprehend oral and written instructions and to provide services to clients without ethnic or social prejudices. It requires general knowledge of issues and challenges unique to homelessness, substance abuse, young adults, minorities, and persons with disabilities. Must be able to utilize a range of interventions to work with clients with varying needs and levels of functioning. Must be flexible to work irregular hours and be willing to function as a team member. Computer skills are required. Also, CPR and First Aid training is required within ninety (90) days of employment, re-certification as necessary, and T.B. testing annually. A valid California driver’s license and the ability to meet the organization's insurance carrier guidelines are preferred. Must undergo a criminal background check.

- Be able to maneuver quickly in emergencies to assist clients as needed
