Major Functions

• The County of Volusia is seeking an experienced Equipment Operator III for the Road and Bridge Division. This position is located throughout various locations inside Volusia County, Florida, and will be responsible in skilled work in the operation of tractors, operating front end loaders;
• operating backhoes with bucket of less than a yard; operating skid steers; operating tandem dump trucks and a motor grader;

performing daily safety inspections of assigned equipment prior to and after each use. Candidate will also be responsible to maintaining County roads and right of way.

Illustrative Duties

• Operates crane or equivalent.
• Operates ten wheel commercial trucks
• Operates a distributer applying oils, asphalt, or tars to highway surface
• Places and removes pipe.
• Operates tractor equipped with front end loader and backhoe with bucket of a yard or more.
• Operates truck mounted pavement striping machine.
• Operates a power grader on construction and maintenance work.
• Operates a heavy duty gasoline or diesel road roller compacting material.
• Operates a heavy bulldozer and maintains a sanitary fill dump.
• Directs truck drivers as to dumping locations.
• Operates a bulldozer in fill area.
• Operates gradall on construction and maintenance work.
• Operates paving machine.
• Operates a lowboy.
• Performs routine field lubrication of light, medium, and heavy rolling stock and equipment
• Transports equipment to and from construction site.
• Occasionally may operate a simple flatbed or dump truck, or a variety of minor powered machinery and equipment.
• Participates generally in the laboring work of the crew as workload demands.
• Operates front end loader.
• Loads fill, rock, slag, and other construction materials.
• Performs daily safety inspections of assigned equipment prior to and after use.
• Performs routine service and maintenance.
• Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
• Responds to emergency situations.
• Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
• May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Completion of eighth (8th) grade and three (3) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy construction equipment.

Possession of a valid Florida CDL Class B or higher at time of appointment and maintain thereafter.

Must possess a valid Florida driver's license at the time of hire and maintain thereafter.

A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum requirements.

The preferred candidate, having met the minimum requirements, will have three (3) years of experience operating a front end loader, skid steer, gradall, grader, and tandem dump truck.

NOTE : A pre-employment skills test will be required.

• Skill in the operation of complex construction equipment.

• Able to interact effectively with others.
• Must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.

ADA REQUIREMENTS

Physical Demands : Heavy work.Ability to pull, push, lift, carry 75 pounds.Ability to reach, climb, sit, see (near and far acuity, depth perception, field of vision,) turn (neck, body), hand.

Visual acuity (depth perception, peripheral vision) necessary to operate motorized vehicles.

Environmental Demands : Outside work. Exposure to inclement weather (heat, humidity, cold, rain), fumes, odors, noise, vibration, dust, poor ventilation.

Mental Demands : Ability to read and comprehend operational and safety instructions, procedures, rules, policies, warnings, memos.

Ability to write simple sentences relaying information, data, and details. Ability to perform basic math.
