What are the responsibilities and job description for the Spiker Operator position at Vorst Paving?
Job Summary
The Spiker Operator is responsible for running equipment on the rail to remove and set spikes into rail plates.
Major Responsibilities
- Run spiker on the rail
- Run heavy equipment on the rail
- Remove rail spikes
- Replace rail spikes
- Help out with rail work as needed
- Maintain various hand tools for assigned work
- Maintain equipment
- Ensure railroad right-of-way is clear
- Ensure a safe working environment
- Class A CDL a plus to haul equipment
Working Conditions
- Up to 12 hour shifts
- On the road job up to 8 nights at a time
- Outdoor work in various types of weather and environmental conditions
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds repeatedly, and more at times
Requirements
- Relevant work experience in similar working conditions or regulatory and safety environment
- Experience operating heavy equipment and machinery, specifically a spiker
- High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
- Railroad knowledge and experience
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must meet all medical fitness for DOT Medical Card
- Must be a team player
- Welding skills a plus
- Mechanic skills a plus
- Valid Class A CDL a plus

Schedule:
- 10 hour to 12 hour shift
- Weekday and weekend work
- 8-day rotation
Supplemental pay types:

Education:
- High school or equivalent (Required)
Experience:
- 2 years railroad and heavy machinery experience preferred
License/Certification:
- Class A Driver's License a plus
Work Location: On the road, travel to and from the jobsite in company vehicles with the crew.
