The Heavy Equipment Lowboy Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of heavy machinery and equipment using a lowboy trailer. This role requires a skilled and experienced driver who can handle oversized and overweight loads, ensuring compliance with all safety regulations and company policies. The driver must be adept at route planning, securing loads, and performing vehicle inspections.
Key Responsibilities:
- Transportation of Heavy Equipment:
- Safely load, transport, and unload heavy equipment such as bulldozers, excavators, and cranes using a lowboy trailer.
- Plan routes to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of equipment, considering road conditions, weight limits, and clearance heights.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Ensure all transported loads comply with state and federal regulations, including obtaining necessary permits for oversized loads.
- Conduct pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections of the vehicle and trailer to ensure roadworthiness and compliance with safety standards.
- Adhere to all company policies and procedures regarding the safe handling and transportation of heavy equipment.
- Load Securing:
- Properly secure all equipment using chains, binders, and other securing devices to prevent movement during transit.
- Inspect and maintain securing devices to ensure they are in good working condition.
- Vehicle Maintenance:
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on the truck and trailer, reporting any major issues to the fleet maintenance team.
- Keep accurate records of maintenance and repairs performed.
- Documentation:
- Ensure all shipping documents, permits, and licenses are current and accurately completed.
Qualifications:
- Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience driving heavy equipment and operating lowboy trailers.
- Proven track record of safely transporting oversized loads.
- Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License CDL-A with appropriate endorsements for operating heavy equipment.
- Current DOT medical card.
- Skills:
- Strong knowledge of federal and state transportation regulations.
- Excellent driving skills, with a focus on safety and attention to detail.
- Ability to perform basic vehicle maintenance and repairs.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and secure heavy equipment.
- Comfortable working in various weather conditions and environments.
- Good physical stamina and manual dexterity.
Working Conditions:
- Schedule:
- Full-time position with variable hours, including potential weekends and overtime.
- Must be available for long-distance hauls and occasional overnight stays.
