Position: Water Plant Operator I / II
Department: Water Treatment
Reports to: Water Treatment Superintendent
Status: Full-time, Classified, Non-Exempt
Pay Grade: Water Plant Operator I – L-9 ($25.5155 - $34.5212)
Water Plant Operator II – L-10 ($26.7274 - $36.1605)
(Classification Assignment Dependent on Qualifications of Successful Candidate)
Normal Working Hours: 6:00 am-2:00 pm, 2:00 pm-10:00 pm, and/or 10:00 pm-6:00 am, variable shifts and days. (Subject to emergency call-outs)
Job Summary: Under the direction of the Water Treatment Plant Superintendent, is responsible for operation of the plant on an assigned shift; performs related duties as required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- The plant operates 24/7; overtime is required as well as working 6-7 day per week.
- Acts as the back-up ORC in the event of absence of the superintendent and lab technician. (Operator II only)
- Operates the plant on assigned shift ensuring that all aspects of the treatment train are operating as expected.
- Collects and analyzes water samples according to Ohio EPA specifications and makes observations at various locations through the treatment process. Reports issues to plant lab tech or superintendent.
- Monitors SCADA for the plant, wells, water towers and lift stations and acts to investigate issues that may arise.
- Learns all aspects of each shift of operations and ability to work all shifts. Willingness to work overtime when needed and adjust scheduled shift as required.
- Works cooperatively with co-workers, supervisors, and other city departments to accomplish tasks and goals.
- Conveys information as appropriate with operations and maintenance staff. Logs all shift activities in log books.
- Answers phones for after hour emergencies and dispatch appropriate departments per their call out procedures.
- Participates in the maintenance and repair of equipment as instructed by superintendent or maintenance staff. Check all areas of the plant during shift to inspect equipment.
- Enters confined spaces of underground tanks for cleaning and maintenance as required.
- Maintains the buildings and grounds of the water treatment plant, well fields, and water towers as directed by the plant superintendent (mowing, weed eating, trimming, painting, etc.).
- Collects water samples in the distribution system.
- Maintains assigned work areas in a clean and orderly fashion.
- Maintains records and prepares required reports.
- Follows all rules from the OEPA to ensure safe drinking water.
- Maintains Class I Water Supply License by attending CEU classes. (Operator I only)
- Maintains Class II or III Water Supply Certification by attending CEU classes. (Operator II only)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Considerable knowledge of the operations, minor repair and maintenance of mechanical equipment in a water treatment plant
- Knowledge of chemistry as applied to water treatment and the ability to perform laboratory test and become EPA certified in chemical analysis.
- Knowledge of basic computer skills, including Microsoft office software.
- English language both oral and written.
- General lab procedures.
- Ability to work with SCADA to monitor plant operations
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
- Ability to work in confined spaces, heights and with hazardous chemicals.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to lift 50-100 lbs. Will also load chemical drums on a dolly weighing up to 740 lbs.
- Ability to operate power and hand tools and other equipment.
- Ability to work all holidays and multiple days in a row.
- Ability to obtain EPA wet chemistry lab certificate and possibly microbiological certificate
Minimum Qualifications for Employment (Water Plant Operator I):
- Possession of a State of Ohio Class I Water Supply Operator’s Certificate.
- Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Ohio motor vehicle operator’s license and the maintenance of insurability with the City’s general liability policy.
Minimum Qualifications for Employment (Water Plant Operator II):
- Possession of a State of Ohio Class II or III Professional Water Supply Operator’s certification.
- Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Ohio motor vehicle operator’s license and the maintenance of insurability with the City’s general liability policy.
Preferred Qualifications (Water Plant Operator II):
- Possession of a State of Ohio Class III Professional Water Supply Operator’s certification.
Special Information:
Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background check, employment reference checks, a physical examination and a pre-employment drug screen. The final applicant will be required to submit to urinalysis prior to the appointment to test for illegal drug use. An applicant with a positive test will not be appointed to the position.
