What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanic II - Limited Term position at Walworth County?

This position is responsible for diagnosing and repairing mechanical, hydraulics and electrical problems on County owned vehicles and equipment.  This position is also responsible for routine maintenance on County owned vehicles and equipment.
 
 SCHEDULE
 Division: Fleet Operations
 Days: Monday - Friday
 Work Hours: 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
 Position FTE: .00, limited term
 
 Position is set to expire December 31, 2024 unless extended by Public Works.

Perform routine maintenance and repair of county-owned vehicles and equipment.
 
 Diagnose problems with the equipment/vehicles.
 
 Replace and rebuild brakes, clutches, hydraulics, engines and other systems on equipment/vehicles.
 
 Fabricate and set up new and used equipment/vehicles.
 
 Wire and repair electrical systems on county-owned equipment/vehicles.
 
 Demonstrate a commitment to county safety and risk management efforts.
 
 Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma plus one additional year of formal preparation, and four to five years of relevant prior experience; or high school diploma or equivalent competencies, and six to seven years of relevant prior experience.  ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification preferred. Experience performing repairs on heavy trucks and equipment strongly preferred.  Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals as well as ability to calculate area, circumference, volume, rate, ratio and percentages.  Ability to draw and interpret bar graphs.  Desired experience in operating heavy equipment such as single and tandem axle trucks, front-end loaders, dozers and motor graders.

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Valid Wisconsin Class D Driver's License required.  Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement N preferred.

Must wear steel toe safety shoes.  

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to drive a 64,000# GVW truck with manual transmission.

Ability to work long hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays.

Knowledge of vehicle diagnosis and maintenance.

Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and regulations governing equipment operation.

Knowledge of preventative maintenance of equipment (i.e. truck, tractor, end-loader, backhoe, grader).

Knowledge of occupational hazards involved and precautions necessary for safe operation of motor-driven equipment, including operation over rough, slippery, icy or unstable conditions.

Ability to perform repairs on heavy trucks and equipment.

Ability to understand, remember and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to utilize basic computer skills to document work efforts and complete timecards.

This position has authority to make decisions that are within general procedures and protocols; supervision is available as required or requested.   These decisions directly impact performance in the job and/or work unit within the department and information is provided with additional research and observations which contributes to the decision making process.

In relation to established procedures, protocols and policies of the County, challenges in this position tend to be diverse, but are typically covered by precedent or established practice.
