SUMMARY: The Driver Trainer plays a leading role in making Waste Away Group and our affiliated companies safer and more productive through improvements to Driver and operator skill sets. The Driver Trainer will train and qualify new drivers and current drivers to operate equipment and perform job in a safe and productive manner that complies with federal and state regulations and company standards.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Instructs new and veteran drivers in the safe and efficient use of all types of vehicles used for the transportation of materials. Rides with driver on route to individualize instruction to drivers abilities and qualifies drivers for successful route activities.
- Educates drivers on other aspects of position through driver orientation: including Smith System, overall safety awareness, effective route management, safe utilization of equipment, and proper customer interaction.
- Evaluates new drivers progress using predetermined criteria to assess need for additional training.
- Reviews veteran drivers performance periodically to ensure compliance with established job standards.
- Develops and evaluates Driver Mentors to insure new hires are partnered with a qualified mentor to assist in their onboarding and development.
- Develops training techniques and materials to best adapt to varied experience levels and driver backgrounds.
- Interacts with dispatchers, mechanics, sales personnel, customer support, and management to improve driver efficiency through training.
- Works with HR to ensures that necessary personnel training records and equipment certifications are completed and properly maintained.
- May assist with accident investigations and other safety related aspects of the business such DOT compliance, forklift certifications, etc.
- Performs all functions in accordance with the Yes I Can philosophy; provides support and backup and performs work of other positions or special projects as assigned.
- Stays well-informed of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and recent technologies in Safety and Training and development fields.
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school education or equivalency preferred.
- Minimum of 3-years of related truck driving experience, with current (non-expired) DOT Physical.
- Proven outstanding safety record and STRONG safety consciousness.
- Training experience is required.
- Proficient PC skills including Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Working knowledge of special truck equipment.
- Must possess a non-expired Commercial Drivers License (CDL-A) with no restrictions. (Must be able to drive a manual transmission)
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA and DOT regulatory compliance.
- Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to read and write legibly and maintain detailed records for regulatory and company compliance purposes.
- Strong time-management skills and attention to detail
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Able to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Environment conditions include exposure to dirt, fumes, noise and changing weather conditions
- Frequently required to enter and exit Vehicles; Climb up and down to access different areas of the vehicle
- Some office working conditions
- Frequent trips outside to perform vehicle audits
- Frequently required to stand and sit; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear
- Occasionally required to walking, stepping, and climbing on uneven ground
