Position Summary:
The Advocate for the American Indian/Alaskan Native (AI/AN) Program will provide culturally responsive advocacy and support services for children, youth and adults who identify as American Indian/Alaskan Native and have been impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault or sex trafficking. This position provides emotional support, advocacy and resources for survivors of domestic and sexual violence and is embedded at Sacramento Native American Health Center (SNAHC). Referrals are received from SNAHC, other Native serving agencies, WEAVE and the community.

Responsibilities:

Direct Client Services

  • Provide culturally responsive emotional support, peer counseling and advocacy, both individually and in a group format
  • Provide internal and external referrals and resources
  • Advocate for the concerns of clients with their support systems, schools, the legal system, and social service providers
  • Actively engage with clients to offer and provide trauma-informed services
  • Actively work toward relationship building with Native serving agencies
  • Actively engage with AI/AN Counselor, SNAHC and WEAVE teams
  • Maintain accurate and timely client documentation, per agency guidelines
  • Provide accurate and timely data for grant reporting
  • Responsive communication with supervisor

Outreach and other Responsibilities

  • Represent the agency in AI/AN community outreach, community events and networking opportunities. Some community events/activities may take place on weekends.
  • Facilitate trainings for SNAHC, other Native serving agencies and internal agency training
  • Seek out community outreach opportunities to promote AI/AN program and WEAVE services
  • Attend and participate in department and agency meetings and committees
  • Other job duties as assigned

ADA Job Characteristics:
Work environment is primarily in an office setting. Local travel (driving) may be required to attend off-site meetings, as needed. Lift and carry 25 lbs., extend both arms above the head and/or reach below the waist, stoop, squat, crawl, bend the back or open lower-level filing drawers, or to retrieve stored items, climb a ladder or stairs, or use an elevator. Sit frequently and/or stand when filing, using copier, etc. Use fine manipulation (hands and wrist) to operate a keyboard, take notes; utilize desk calculator, file and copy documents. Corrected vision to normal range. Speak in normal vocal tone and range, and communicate clearly and concisely to others. Apply normal reasoning and detail as required in the accomplishment of job duties.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Services field
  • Experience working with children, youth and adults of various ages and diverse backgrounds
  • Experience working with domestic violence and sexual assault
  • Experience working with unserved and underserved communities
  • Reflective of AI/AN community
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Complete WEAVE’s 69-hour classroom training and peer counselor certification program (post-hiring requirement)
  • Provide copy of valid California driver license, have reliable transportation, and submit current proof of vehicle insurance
  • Satisfactory results from DOJ background check (post employment offer requirement)
