What are the responsibilities and job description for the Farm Manager position at Webber Restaurant Group?
Who are we?
Gibbet Hill Farm is a three acre, minimal-till diversified farm located in Groton, MA. We are a part of the award-winning Gibbet Hill Grill and are dedicated to providing produce to the restaurant and the other four restaurants within Webber Restaurant Group. We farm a mix of vegetables, herbs, some perennial fruit, microgreens, edible and cut flowers, along with raising a small herd of lambs and pigs on another acre of pasture. This will be our sixth season using a minimal till system and organic practices. In addition to supplying produce to the restaurants, for the past couple season have also provided a small CSA option.
A full team consists of the farm manager, assistant manager and two field crew members. The manager will be expected to run or delegate all aspects of the vegetable production as well as tending a small herd of lambs and school of pigs, running the CSA and maintaining a flow of communication with the chefs. This is a unique opportunity for a farmer that is specifically interested in the intersection of farming and restaurants.
Essential Job Functions:
- Field work: planting, harvesting, irrigation, pest and disease control, weeding etc.
- Greenhouse work: seeding and watering
- Wash station work: washing, processing, packing and delivering produce
- Farm maintenance: weekly tidying of the fields, cleaning and mending of farm structures, and washing of tools and equipment
- Restaurant deliveries
- Strategic planning sessions with chefs to come up with future planting plans
- Livestock chores
- Small construction projects
- Occasionally instructing and working alongside individual volunteers
- Acting as a liaison between the farm, chefs, CSA members and the general public
- Representing the farm at the summer and fall Farm dinners
Qualifications:
- At least two years of management experience
- Minimal/no-till experience preferable
- Tractor experience preferable
- Livestock experience preferable
- Some carpentry experience preferable
- Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Must have a valid driver’s license
- Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.
