Some Job Duties Include:
- Consistently draws blood competently and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible.
- Properly identifies the patient – asking the patient to spell their last name and say their date of birth while comparing the patient information on the lab requisition, the patient’s identification band and specimen labels (if available) before venipuncture is performed.
- Properly labels and records all test tubes used in collection, logs procedures, processes patient paperwork, (orders, results, faxed/charted).
- Records the phlebotomy date and time and initials on all blood tubes/specimens collected at the patient’s bedside, as well as on the patient’s requisition/billing sheet.
- Is knowledgeable in and can supply and instruct patients on proper specimen collection (outside of the laboratory) technique i.e., 24 hr. urine collection, fecal occult blood collection, preparation for fasting blood test collection or glucose tolerance testing.
- Maintains a safe and efficient working environment by properly disposing of all sharps in a rigid sharps container and bio hazardous waste and properly cleaning workstations and work benches.
- Performs urinalysis (dip) on urine specimens excluding microscopic examination.
- Upon completion of Competency and Proficiency Training is competent to:
- - Load patient specimens for testing on the Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Cepheid, ID Now, Abbot l-stat, Medtox UDS, and Piccolo instruments:
- - Correctly enters patient demographics.
- - Select appropriate specimen type and testing container and volume.
- - Correctly selects the ordered tests to be analyzed.
- - Recognizes instrument errors and alarms.
- Performs (under the supervision of a certified technologist) waived and non-waived diagnostic testing for which competency and proficiency has been demonstrated and documented.
- Accurately completes documentation in quality control and patient testing logs results and corrective actions for unacceptable or questionable results and reports these to a staff technologist or laboratory manager.
- Cleans and supplies venipuncture trays. Maintains work areas. Orders supplies when needed.
- Processing patient paperwork, medical record, charting results. Is familiar with the laboratory billing practices, reviews billing and can call needed correction to the attention of the laboratory technologist or manager.
Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- 80 hours of training in the proper procedure to be employed in the performance of venipuncture and skin punctures under the supervision of the Medical Technologist.
- Medical Assistant or Phlebotomy certification highly recommended.
