Job Description:

Under the general direction of, and in collaboration with the physician and practice manager, provides diagnosis and treatment of patients within the scope of practice as defined by all applicable Federal, State and local laws, regulations, protocols, etc. and within the individual physician assistant’s particular clinical specialty area, licensure and competency level. Performs acts of medical diagnosis or prescription of medical therapeutic or corrective measures as appropriate. Supervises and schedules the work of specified midlevel practitioners providing clinical services.


Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Accountabilities:

  • Facilitates communication between practice Physicians and Advance Practice Providers.
  • Acts as a resource, educator and consultant to staff. Develops and evaluates standards of care and protocols as necessary.
  • Provides intervention, formal counseling, corrective action plans and recommendations of termination for APP staff, in conjunction with WMG and service line leadership.
  • Orients new midlevel practitioner staff as well as oversees their growth and development.
  • Ensures that APP staff is up to date on competencies and training as it pertains to any new technologies that have been introduced by the practice team
  • Develops a monthly schedule to coordinate coverage for Advanced Practice Provider services. Schedules PTO and CME time granted for APPs.
  • Coordinates the hiring of future Advanced Practice Providers for the practice, including interviewing, selection, facilitating the credentialing process and orientation schedules in conjunction with WMG and service line leadership.
  • Conducts annual performance reviews in collaboration with the Advance Practice Provider's supervising/collaborating physician.
  • Represent their practice Advance Practice Providers at necessary meetings.
  • Evaluates patients admitted to supervising physician's service through physical examination and development of a detailed medical history.
  • Develops treatment plan and discusses proposed course of treatment with patient's attending physician.
  • Writes progress notes on patients' charts indicating patient status and treatment of procedures performed.
  • Provides emotional support to patient and family as may be appropriate.

NonEssential Accountabilities:

  • Attends meetings as required.
  • Performs other related duties as identified.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population. Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment. Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s).
  • Demonstrates a commitment to patient, visitor and staff by: complying with all applicable safety regulations; learning the impact of medical errors and methodology that will lead to reduction of errors; reporting actual and potential errors, as well as hazardous conditions; identifying opportunities to standardize processes and "error proof" systems that will lead to increased safety; and participating in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required.
  • Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, inservice meetings, and workshops.
  • Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.

Qualifications

  • Notes:
    • Other combinations of formal education, training and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum Experience:
    • 3 - 8 years of Advanced Practice Provider experience
  • Minimum Education:
    • Nurse Practitioner – Master’s Degree with national certification
    • Physician Assistant - Bachelor's Degree; Master’s preferred
  • Required Certification:
    • Nurse Practitioner - Registration and current license as CRNP in PA; appropriate clinical specialty certification; Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
    • Physician Assistant - NCCPA (National Commission on Certification of PA’s) certification; ACLS; Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Required Courses:
    • Nurse Practitioner - Completion of an accredited program for nurse practitioners
  • Physical Demands:
    • Occasional prolonged standing/walking
    • Occasionally lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfers patients
