1. Assists with patient assessment and care provision (under the direction of the Registered Nurse
o Measures / records patient information (hgt, wgt, v / s)
o Measures intake & output
o Observes and records feces and urine
o Observes / reports or records patient response to care given
o Identifies and reports deviation in v / s or patient observations & patient needs to RN
o Assists with dressing and undressing
2. Assists patients in meeting nutritional and elimination needs
o Feeds patients, provides fresh drinking water / liquids & nourishment's
o Assists patients with bedpans / urinals / commode
3. Assists patients with bed rest care and mobility
o Assists with turning and positioning with RN or EMT.
o Transfers to w / c or stretcher with assist as indicated
o Assists with use of assistive devices such as walkers, canes, crutches
4. Assists patient with comfort care and emotional support
o Protects patient 's physical privacy during care
o Provides reassurance, acceptance and encouragement during times of stress
o Listens attentively / displays interest in patient
o Updates patient / family as directed by RN
o Provides diversional activities
o Provides comfort measures (I.e. : music, reading material)
5. Assists in promoting patient safety & environmental cleanliness / order
o Uses side rails appropriately
o Keeps patient unit clean, clutter-free, and free of hazards
o Keeps call bell within patient reach
o Answers call bells promptly reporting patient's need as indicated
o Carries out isolation precautions
o Observes oxygen precautions
o Recognizes life threatening emergencies & responds appropriately
6. Utilizes organizational skills to assure smooth functioning of department operations.
o Checks with charge nurse frequently to prioritize duties related to ongoing department activity
o Prioritizes delegated tasks based on patient care needs and unit activities and requests assistance as needed
o Runs errands as required, delivering specimens to the lab, transporting patients, assisting with special procedures, and other tasks as indicated
o Completes work / assignments within allotted time, reporting unfinished responsibilities
o Assists RN with the patient disposition
o Preforms room checks, restocks and obtains items commonly used for patient care
o Assists with the orientation of new or transferred employees
7. Performs clerical duties as assigned
o Assembles packets and charts
o Enters lab, pulmonary and diagnostic procedure orders in the computer Order Entry system
8. Acquires and maintains current knowledge and competency in LNA practice
o Acquires and maintains clinical knowledge and skills appropriate to the assigned area and practice setting
o Maintains personal documentation of inservice attendance
9. Demonstrates competency in performance of procedures and skills under the direction of the RN
o Simple dressing change
o Suture set-up and assist
o Uncomplicated IV removal
o Application of vital sign monitoring equipment
o Application of seizure pads
o Application of cold
o 12-Lead EKG acquisition
o Clean catch UA specimen collection
o Waived tests, Chain of Custody Urine tests
o Simple splint application, Sling, Ace wrap
o Crutch fitting
o Ortho shoes
o O2 per RN direction
o Phlebotomy
o Pyxis Supply Station
o Logicare preparation
10. Assists Triage RN with Nurse First function
o Identifies patient chief complaint
o Notifies RN of emergent patient complaints
o Brings patient to appropriate treatment area
o Assists with patient / equipment set up as time allows
o Provides safe handoffs to treatment RN
Qualifications
Experience Minimum Required
3 Months LNA or EMT-B experience, preferably in an acute care setting
Experience Preferred / Desired
1 year experience as an LNA or EMT-B
Education Minimum Required
High School Diploma or Equivalent
Special Skills Minimum Required
ARC or AHA BLS
Licensure and / or Certifications Required
- LNA or EMT
