Manager, Design Engineering
Westerman, Inc. is a multiple site manufacturer of production and storage equipment within the oil, gas, and nuclear industries. Position Summary
The Manager, Design Engineering supervises daily activities of the Design Engineers and Controls Engineers that design, draft, and specify oil and gas production and processing equipment and systems. Oversees and contributes to the design and development of equipment and systems or redesign of existing equipment to fulfill operational and quality requirements. Acts as an advisor to the Design and Controls Engineering disciplines regarding projects, tasks, and operations. Acting as a true first line supervisor, this role manages subordinate staff in day-to-day performance of their jobs and will ensure that department milestones/goals are met while adhering to approved budgets.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate customer supplied data (3D CADD files, drawings, scopes of work, and quality documents) to extract requirements that impact the designs and ultimately the end product
- Actively engage with external customers, project managers, and the commercial team in discussions about gaps in defined scope of supply as compared with customer requirements
- Passionately pursue the identification of scope change and escalate to the project manager or commercial lead for consideration
- Hire, train, mentor, conduct performance reviews, and discipline as required the Design Engineers and Controls Engineers
- Assign Design Engineering and Controls Engineering resources to new projects. Monitor project progress and be prepared to step-in if projects are under performing within these disciplines
- Develop, maintain, and ensure compliance with engineering and business standard operating procedures
- Ensure the effective implementation of all corrective actions and own the results
- Define and develop tools needed to improve quoting speed, accuracy
Required Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Petroleum, Electrical or Instrumentation Engineering from an ABET accredited university
Minimum of five years of experience as an individual contributor in a related role and minimum seven-ten years of experience in a related supervisory role.
Knowledge of ASME, API, NFPA, ANSI and other standards
In depth knowledge of national and international codes and standards for Oil & Gas process equipment design and fabrication
Experience working within multidisciplinary teams and in managing work against safety, quality, cost and time constraints.
Ability to develop process equipment scheme and layout from conceptual design basis considering operability, maintenance and safety.
Multi-tasking and ability to work well under pressure with multiple competing priorities
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to comprehend of project specifications and contract documents.
Ability to review and comprehend Piping & Instrumentation Drawings (P&ID’s)
Strong interpersonal communication skills.
Strong problem solving and organizational skills.
Software-efficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint).
