Qualifications
Must personally embrace The Salvation Army Harbor Light Mission. High School Diploma or equivalent. Ability to take directions and adapt to fast pace environment. Ability to stand on feet all day. Ability to lift 50 pounds. Preferred six (6) months practical work experience in the field of high volume housekeeping/janitorial experience. Must be able to demonstrate sensitivity to issues of homelessness, chemical addiction, and unemployment, racial and cultural diversity. Possess an aptitude in oral communications. Must be trustworthy, especially in confidential matters. Must be able to pass background checks, including a MVR if driving required and pre-employment drug test. It must be understood by the incumbent that the provisions of Safe From Harm will apply upon commencement of employment, and also understood that the required Safe From Harm training program must be satisfactorily completed within the first ninety (90) days of employment.
Position Summary
To maintain facility at highest possible level of cleanliness. To ensure that assigned areas are cleaned and maintained on a daily basis.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Clean and maintain your assigned area’s hallways and common areas including walls and floors.
- Clean and maintain your assigned area’s bathrooms and showers including walls and floors.
- Clean and maintain your assigned area’s dorms including walls and floors.
- Clean and maintain your assigned area’s offices including walls and floors.
- Empty and change trash cans in your assigned area. Throw out all trash you find, including broken furniture, boxes, litter, etc.
- Proactively clean all areas in the building, including desks, tables, sinks, countertops, etc.
- Put items into their correct areas including tables, chairs, towels, laundry bins, garbage cans etc.
- Change shower curtains as needs or when requested.
- Complete all tasks in a safe manner, using the appropriate cleaning supplies and putting them away at the end of each of your shifts.
- Supervise all volunteers assigned to assist you in your job duties.
- Consult with your supervisor on the proper use of cleaning supplies, daily work assignments and Harbor Light Policies and Procedures.
- Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with volunteers, co-workers and supervisors. This would include, but not limited to such actions: conflict resolution in a professional manner; courteous treatment of volunteers, staff, visitors and clients; respect of others property and person and appropriate communication to and about co-workers and supervisors.
- Support the mission of The Harbor Light Center by treating every client and colleague with individual respect and dignity, and without discrimination of any kind.
- And all other duties as assigned or at management requests.
Working Conditions
There are normally no hazardous or significantly unpleasant physical working conditions, with the exception of the occasional emotional distress or turmoil (due to varying situations) with and between staff and/or clients. The duties and responsibilities of this position cannot be performed from home.

Risk Level 3 - The tasks or activities conducted by Risk Level 3 workers involve reasonably anticipated exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials.

Travel
- The incumbent may be required to travel by personal vehicle, organization vehicle or other mode of travel as required supporting the mission of The Salvation Army.

Mathematics Ability
- Ability to perform basic math skills, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and percentages.
- Ability to prepare budgets
Language Ability
- Ability to fluently speak read and write in English.
- Ability to read a variety of books, magazines, instruction manuals, atlases, and encyclopedias.
- Ability to prepare memos, reports, and essays using proper punctuation, spelling and grammar.
- Ability to communicate distinctly with appropriate pauses and emphasis; correct punctuation and variation in word order; using present, perfect, and future tenses.
Reasoning Ability
- Ability to deal with a variety of variables under only limited standardization.
