Job description: Westlake Legal Group is seeking an associate attorney to join a client focused law firm serving individuals, families, and businesses locally and statewide in state and federal courts. The associate will be responsible for the initiation, maintenance, and litigation of client matters under the supervision of the firm’s principal and senior associates.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Initial client consultation and case evaluation
- Draft and edit case initiation and responsive pleadings necessary for ongoing client matters
- Undertake legal research and draft legal memoranda for complex issues
- Maintain communication with clients, courts, counsel, and witnesses
- Oversee the discovery process, including requests, responses, and objections.
- Coordinate trial preparation with legal assistants, paralegals, and co-counsel when necessary
- Appear in Virginia state and federal courts for hearings and trials
- Actively market the comparative advantage of the firm’s services
Requirements:
- Virginia State Bar member in good standing
- Proficiency in legal research, including the LexisAdvance platform
- Interest in civil litigation, including but not limited to personal injury, domestic relations, contracts, and other business matters, and criminal litigation
- Proficiency with legal writing and drafting
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to manage and schedule a diverse caseload and to meet hard internal and external deadlines
- Ability to analyze complex legal issues in a collegial setting with fellow counsel
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, attorneys, co-workers, and other outside professionals
- Demonstrated proactive approach to problem-solving with strong decision making capability
Preferences:
- 2-3 years experience, preferred but not required
- Experience in a law firm setting, preferred but not required
Compensation commensurate with experience.
