What are the responsibilities and job description for the Property Data Supervisor position at Whatcom County?
The Whatcom County Assessor's Office seeks an experienced, proven leader to serve as Property Data Supervisor. This critical position oversees the analysis of property configurations and ownership information and the maintenance of the Assessor’s Office Assessment Roll records, maps and Geographic Information System (GIS.) Works in conjunction with the Assessor’s Office and representatives of other county departments and government agencies to develop and maintain shared databases on valid property, real estate sales and assessment records.
Essential Duties include but are not limited to:
- Performs tasks related to supervising the maintenance of the Assessor’s Office Assessment Roll and other databases, and maps. Responsible for functions and personnel related to maintaining and validating assessment roll information on property listings, property descriptions, real estate sales, and assessment records based on analyses of recorded documents, instruments of conveyance, and other relevant coordinated Assessor’s Office operational program database information.
- Directs ongoing maintenance of parcel layer and other data sets relating to assessment procedures in a complex Geographic Information System.
- Coordinates and works closely with other County departments including Information Technology and Planning and Development Services to establish workflows for oversight and management of the County’s Geographic Information System to provide accurate, high quality data for County and public use.
- Assures property owners are notified and provided options when instruments of conveyance or transactions contain errors.
- Reviews transfers of property involved in real property tax exemption programs; authorizes continuation in program subsequent to satisfaction of statutory requirements, or denies continuation and notifies property owners.
- Establishes, updates, and documents appropriate GIS policies, procedures and tasks.
- Participates in the selection of new employees. Advises and provides initial orientation for staff. Responsible for providing on-the-job training. Assigns, supervises and evaluates work consistent with assigned job classification.

Requires:- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Computer Science, Civil Engineering, Cartography, Real Estate, or a related field
- 3 years of progressively responsible related experience
- 2 years of lead or supervisory experience.
Requires knowledge of: the Rectangular Coordinate Survey System. and Real estate law in the particular areas of title transfer, ownership and boundaries, drafting and surveying.
At its sole discretion, Whatcom County may consider combinations of education, experience, certifications, and training in lieu of specifically required qualifications contained herein.
Full Salary Range:
Unrepresented Range 7
$6,057 - $8,795 per month (effective January 7, 2024)
Hiring rate depends on qualifications.
This position receives annual pay increases to the next step in the associated salary range (apx. 3.8%) subject to satisfactory performance, in addition to approved Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA).
