Primary Objectives:
Responsible for the General Ledger and General Accounting functions in a dynamic, fast paced transportation, warehousing and distribution E-commerce environment. Responsibilities include processing a variety of journal entries and reconciliations and perform various support functions for Regional and Corporate. The Sr. Accountant coordinates inputs from multiple business functions, a critical role within the Accounting department primarily responsible for the integrity and maintenance of the General Ledger encompassing 7 divisions, several business lines, and 20 cost centers (buildings). Reports to the Accounting Supervisor and works closely with the Corporate Accounting Manager and Corporate Controller.
Initially, the Sr. Accountant will be primarily working together with the Corporate Controller to 1) liaison between the Ryder and the Whiplash teams for the collection and/or creation of information/documentation requests to achieve Whiplash migration into Ryder’s world-class ERP Workday system, 2) align all legacy business processes and policies for a smooth transition into those of Ryder’s when migrated into ERP Workday, and 3) assist training the Accounting, Finance teams on the ERP and process re-designs from knowledge gain through the project. This is a high-exposure project with both the Whiplash and Ryder teams.
Principal Duties and End Results
- Maintain the General Ledger Accounting for assigned divisions, business lines and cost centers
- Primary focus is on all Balance Sheet accounts including Cash, A/R, Fixed assets, Deposits, Prepaid, accrued expenses, Intercompany, and deferred rent
- Fixed asset accounting for regional and corporate
- Coordinates the Intercompany accounting activity between related companies and ensures monthly elimination of any balances between the operating divisions
- Validation of accuracy of general ledger postings, and correct application of GAAP accounting to complex business transactions
- Perform month end closing duties, account analysis and reconciliations, initiate and input journal entries with required supporting documentation
- Specific Journal entries include but not limited to depreciation, payroll, prepaids, accruals, amortizations, intercompany, allocations, and reclassifications as needed
- Maintenance and analysis of monthly schedules validating the integrity of the financial statements, researches all reconciling items and provides resolutions
- Balance Sheet fluctuation analysis
- Compile reports related to internal audits and fulfillment of financial regulatory requirements including Financial Statement
- Provides support for Federal, State, and local tax returns
- Identifies and report any significant impact items affecting the financial statement and help initiate actions to address
- Monitors Accounting Policies and Procedures
- Participate in business improvement teams and identify opportunities that lead to improved profitability
Migration into Ryder’s Workday System
- Attend meetings with both Whiplash and Ryder teams with the primary focus to facilitate information exchange and obtaining an understanding of the Ryder’s information and documentation needs, following up on deliverables directly related to the migration from legacy systems and processes into Ryder’s Workday System and processes
- Gain an understanding of the Workday’s inner JEs and schedule review and approval processes and change/align Whiplash legacy processes for a smooth team’s transition into Workday environment requirements at go-live
- Assistance developing and/or adjusting legacy financial schedules to meet Ryder’s learned requirements prior or at time of Migration
- Work with the Finance, Accounting, and other teams for an understanding of Whiplash systems and processes aimed directly at facilitating and/or creating supporting documentation in satisfying of Ryder’s requests related to the Workday system migration
- Ad hoc reporting as needed
Qualifications
Requirements:
- Requires a four-year degree in business with emphasis in Accounting
- Minimum of 5 years experienced as a Sr. Accountant in a high-volume environment
- CPA, preferred, not required
- A thorough knowledge of accounting principles (US GAAP), procedures and systems with a solid understanding of Payroll, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and General Ledger Accounting
- Project or consulting acumen, and/or system implementation experience preferred, not required
- Excellent communication, writing, reporting skills to effectively communicate technical financial information
- Experience in apparel or retail warehousing and/or with a 3PL a plus.
- Strong appreciation for the importance of ensuring accuracy in all levels of financial reporting
- Strong PC skills including advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and proficiency in the rest of the Microsoft Office Suite.
- Self-driven and resourceful to meet deadlines, achieve goals, work independently as well as work well in teams or groups.
- Flexibility to multi-task and adjust to changing requirements, ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines especially during month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing.
