Description

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to respond to fire, emergency rescue, and hazardous material calls to protect the lives and properties of the citizens of Whitfield County. Position is also responsible for assisting with testing and maintaining fire equipment and apparatus, operating and monitoring equipment during response operations, and performing various maintenance and custodial duties at the assigned fire station. This position also participates in fire prevention and inspection activities, equipment and station maintenance, and training dealing with all phases of fire suppression, prevention, inspection, rescue and emergency operation. Performs emergency firefighting, rescue and hazardous material tasks as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Responds to incidents requiring firefighting, emergency rescue or hazardous material response; reports to incident command to receive assign task such as deploying hoses, nozzles, hand tools, fans, generator, power saws and rescue equipment.. Makes forced entries into structures; searches structures; extinguishes fires; rescues trapped or injured persons; assists fire victims; ventilates structures; secures fire scenes; performs salvage operations.

Assists in salvage and overhaul at fire scenes; participates in wash-downs at scenes of accident or spills; may assist law enforcement or other investigators in determining cause of incidents.
Assists in the evacuation of persons and property in emergency situations, such as aircraft crashes, fires, floods, and other natural or manmade disasters; may perform rescue of persons involved in hazardous material incidents, trench collapse, water emergencies, high or low angle rope, or automobile accidents.
Responds to calls for emergency medical services; provides services during emergency and/or rescue operations in accordance with protocols for Basic Life Support; evaluates injuries and mental status; dresses wounds; immobilizes fractures; takes vital signs; obtains medical history; treats patients at scene and/or stabilizes and prepares patients for transport to medical facility; communicates information to hospital; triages multiple patients; assures safety of EMS scenes.
Assist in performing fire safety inspections; inspects homes or businesses for damages; advises homeowner or business manager on recommended repairs.

Assist in inspections of assigned emergency response apparatus and equipment daily to ensure efficient operating condition and readiness; cleans and maintains equipment, as necessary, after completion of emergency response operations; performs minor repairs and assists in major repair of apparatus and equipment, as appropriate; tests equipment.

Attends and participates in training sessions on such topics as fire suppression techniques, equipment techniques, emergency medical care, hazardous material containment, street layout and building and hydrant location, incident

command, management, inspections, leadership training, etc.; participates in ongoing physical training activities. Assist in training volunteers, firefighters, and supervising community service workers.

Prepares and maintains activity records, providing pertinent information to departmental personnel on following shift; reviews activity reports from previous shift and confers with personnel, as necessary; organizes and maintains departmental files.

Assists the Fire Lieutenant/person in charge in the day-to-day operation of the fire station; provides input for planning and scheduling fire station work; cleans and performs minor maintenance on department buildings; maintains fire station grounds.
Assists in inspecting fire hydrants and calculates required fire flow data and flow testing data.
Assists with public education and fire safety programs; provides tours of fire stations and emergency vehicles.
Attends meetings.
Operates a computer, calculator, office equipment, slide projector, firefighting equipment, emergency rescue equipment, self-contained breathing apparatus, emergency vehicles, fire apparatus, generators, lawn maintenance equipment, portable extrication units, ladders, shovel, mop, bolt cutters, flash light, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software.

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or GED; two years of experience in firefighting and emergency response; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.

  • State of Georgia Certified Firefighter
  • Medical First Responder
  • Crash Victim Extrication
  • Handling Flammable and Combustible Liquids Incidents
  • Interior Search & Rescue
  • Pressurized Container Fire Control
  • Structural Fire Control
  • NPQ Firefighter I
  • NPQ Firefighter II
  • NPQ Hazardous Materials (Operations Level)

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (20-50 pounds); may involve heavier objects and materials (up to 200 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, taste, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
