Job Summary WCS seeks to strengthen its Conservation Innovations team, especially with respect to technical approaches to landscape and urban ecology research, in the context of conservation of wildlife and wild places at landscape, regional, and global scales. The successful candidate will work with the team to develop and extend visionary scientific applications such as the “Act Green” platform producing near real-time assessments of habitat for wildlife species; the human footprint analysis of human impacts globally; urban ecology related analyses such as the Bottleneck to Breakthrough theory (Sanderson et al., 2018), Mannahatta/Welikia (Sanderson 2009), and the web-based ecological democracy tool, Visionmaker.nyc; and other applied conservation analyses. The successful candidate will possess cutting-edge spatial analysis and programming skills, write well, and have a demonstrated record of scientific publication and fundraising. This conservation ecologist will also have capacity to help build program in concert with others, exemplary ethics, and a deep and abiding concern for the conservation of nature. Over time, the candidate will be expected to raise funds to strengthen and expand the activities of the landscape and urban ecology team, including developing his/her/their own scientific program in close alignment with WCS mission and Global Conservation Program activities.
Major Responsibilities • Provide technical support for existing applications (Act Green, human footprint, etc.) o Oversee team of GIS analysts, programmers, web developers, and statisticians o Contribute to technical documentation and development of web applications o Develop innovative uses of the tools, extend them in new ways, and develop scientific and research publications as a result • Develop, expound, and publish on scientific ideas that deepen and grow WCS success in global conservation broadly within the areas of urban and landscape ecology at various scales • Help raise the funds necessary to support the programs of the landscape/urban ecology team, including over time his/her own scientific program, including preparing grant applications and reports, work with donors, and uncover new opportunities • Coordinate closely with WCS Global Conservation program leadership, scientists and regional programs
