What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Instructor -History position at Wilkes Community College?

This is a full-time, 9-month position. The faculty member must instruct assigned courses in accordance with NCCCS curriculum standards and course descriptions in addition to the standards and guidelines set forth by the program accreditation entity. Courses may be scheduled for day, evening, or weekends and in WCC’s service area and high schools. WCC views faculty members as learning-facilitators who actively engage students in the learning process.

Essential Duties Summary
The Lead Instructor faculty position includes the following responsibilities and expectations:
  • Eighteen to twenty-five hour contact-hour teaching load comprised of History courses within the Associate in Arts, Associate in Sciences, and Associate in Engineering programs of study, plus a minimum of five scheduled office hours.
  • Hold required office hours each day.
  • Planning, creating and maintaining a classroom environment conducive to student learning.
  • Maintaining a high level of currency in the discipline and incorporating innovative and creative instructional techniques in the classroom.
  • Learner-centered, outcomes-based instruction delivered via traditional classroom, interactive video, virtual/synchronous, and internet/asynchronous.
  • Serving as a faculty mentor for students toward completion of program, diploma, or degree goals and assisting students with job placement or college transfer.
  • Referring students, as appropriate, to student support areas of WCC including Resource Connections, Counseling and/or Student Support Services, and the Academic Support Center.
  • Attending commencement exercises, committee, and task force meetings, and division meetings as scheduled.
  • Support career and college promise classes and instructors to ensure curriculum alignment and student success.
  • Continuous improvement through assessment and evidence-based decision-making.
  • Serve on division and college committees, as assigned.
  • Participate in professional development including Professional Learning Communities.
  • Maintaining a working knowledge of the North Carolina Community College System Combined Course Library and Curriculum Standards and ensuring the Wilkes Community College catalog listings and discipline webpage information are current and accurate.
  • Assisting the Departmental Chairperson or Dean of Division in maintaining academic currency (in conjunction with other full-time faculty members in the discipline, if any) by providing leadership for curriculum revision and development and by maintaining the quality and currency of the book and periodical collections in the library.
  • Assisting the Departmental Chairperson or Dean of Division in long- and short-range planning and determining an annual budget.
  • Assisting the Departmental Chairperson or Dean of Division with semester scheduling, textbook order, and other administrative planning tasks as needed.
  • Recommending appropriate and current equipment, performing equipment inventories, maintaining equipment in good working condition, and taking necessary steps to ensure student safety around equipment.
  • Recruiting, mentoring, and evaluating qualified adjunct instructors (in conjunction with other full-time faculty members in the discipline, as appropriate).
  • Collaborating with the biology department among all campus locations (Wilkes, Ashe, and Alleghany) in the creation of syllabi; the alignment of objectives, competencies, and assessments; and the selection of textbooks, periodicals, and other resources.
  • Commitment to WCC’s mission, vision, and core values.
  • Support the college’s initiatives to enhance the learning environment and execute our mission.
  • Fulfilling other responsibilities as assigned by the Departmental Chairperson, Dean of Division, or Vice President of Instruction.

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree with at least 18 graduate hours in the teaching discipline of history.
  • At least three years of teaching experience in history courses in seated, online, and blended formats.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with teaching political science and/or humanities classes in seated, online, and blended formats.
  • Community college teaching experience.
  • Teaching high school students.


Physical Demands
This position operates in a professional academic office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment. This position regularly requires long hours and some weekend work. Travel as appropriate to achieve community college objectives, attend meetings, and implement strategic initiatives.
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. May be required to work some evenings and Saturdays.
