This position will be part of the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP) at the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH). The NADP collects precipitation and other atmospheric samples at over 300 sites across North America, and is responsible for providing support to maintain sampling equipment across the networks. This position will primarily be responsible for leading site support for NADP, which includes using existing applications to communicate with sites, troubleshoot equipment issues, create and provide procedural documents, and coordinate the supply of equipment as needed. The position will be responsible for overseeing field equipment repairs and ensuring adequate inventory is maintained in NADP's equipment depot. The position will also be responsible for review and management of atmospheric data from the sites. A strong candidate will be comfortable troubleshooting and repairing mechanical and electronic equipment.

The position requires effective team skills to contribute to the efficient operation of the work unit and organization. The position also requires someone who is self-motivated and can work independently. The successful candidate must be able to manage time efficiently, pay attention to detail and be able to switch to new tasks efficiently. A strong candidate should be comfortable communicating verbally and in written format, and managing and prioritizing multiple tasks in a timely manner. This position is full time, 40 hours per week. This position works under general supervision and reports to the Field Operation Supervisor. The position is in person and located at the State Lab of Hygiene building located at 465 Henry Mall on the UW campus.

The employee in this position is expected to use the tools and principles of quality management in performing their daily work. The employee must demonstrate exceptional customer service by establishing and maintaining effective professional relationships with managers, supervisors, co-workers and all customers and consistently model appropriate behaviors and assist other staff in developing effective relationships. The employee is expected to provide constructive feedback for the purpose of continuous improvement in a manner that is supportive of the State Laboratory of Hygiene and its mission, use data collection tools as appropriate; use effective team skills to contribute to the efficient operation of the work unit; present ideas, carry out assignments, provide information as required and participate in continuous learning through professional development activities.

Provides technical expertise in a research, development, or scientific program. Designs, modifies, and adapts equipment to create unique systems in support of research, development, or instruction, involving, but not limited to, the disciplines of electronics, mechanical/thermal systems, optics, and/or computers.

  • 30% Provides technical expertise to staff, researchers, clients, and students in the installation and use of equipment and instruments, exercising discretion and independent judgment to meet unit goals
  • 10% Develops, integrates, tests, and modifies sophisticated scientific equipment to support research/clinical initiatives and unit directives
  • 15% Designs, plans, and performs preventative and reactive maintenance on equipment to ensure optimal and safe operation
  • 20% Answers questions and provides technical information regarding instrumentation to staff, researchers, clients, and students
  • 5% Investigates new research processes and technology solutions in collaboration with research/clinical staff, students, and clients
  • 20% Atmospheric Mercury Network (AMNet) Site Liaison: Provides site support to AMNet sites, manages, reviews and reports AMNet data.
