Legal Assistant (Family Law)
Wolcott Rivers Gates is seeking a skilled and experienced Legal Assistant to join our team! This position works closely with a family law attorney. The Legal Assistant assists with all administrative tasks and supports all aspects of managing case progression from initial consultation to final disposition. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, self-motivated, has excellent written and verbal communication skills, and possesses a strong understanding of the litigation process and court procedures in Virginia. The ability to multi-task and keep up with a fast-paced, high-volume practice is a must.
What does someone in this role do?
They interact with attorneys, paralegals, administrative staff, courts, clients, and other parties through various forms of professional communication. They fill a key role on the team, performing administrative and clerical duties necessary to communicate with clients and other parties, meet deadlines, and keep the attorney organized, prepared, and on time for all meetings and court appearances. They are responsible for drafting legal documents and correspondence, and managing each case; staying on top of all deadlines, court appearances, tasks, and case status/progress. They are tech-savvy and assist with basic computing and navigation of legal software and systems.
The Legal Assistant provides support and assistance with a variety of tasks throughout all stages of litigation to include:
- Consultations and client intake
- Communication with clients, courts, opposing counsel, and other related parties
- General client services
- Scheduling: Coordinating schedules among meeting participants
- Calendar management: Managing attorney calendars and providing reminders for important dates
- Maintaining organized electronic and hard-copy case files
- Data entry; Tracking case status and deadlines in case management software and systems
- Preparing, filing, and serving legal documents such as pleadings, motions, letters, discovery requests, stipulations, proposed orders, support calculations, subpoenas, petitions, settlement agreements, memos, affidavits, correspondence, and other legal documents/forms
- Billing and invoicing; Tracking and entering billable hours
- Typing/transcribing and formatting handwritten or dictated notes, letters, time-entries, and other documents as requested by the attorney
- Organizing documents for and preparing attorneys to handle depositions, trials, mediations, and court appearances
- Completing other ad-hoc requests and duties as assigned
Qualified candidates must also have a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Adobe, and Outlook, and be able to maintain a minimum typing speed of 45 words per minute (60 wpm preferred). Candidates with 2 or more years of experience in family/domestic law along with a minimum of a two (2) year college degree or legal studies program certificate preferred.
