Director of Development
Mission Statement:
The mission of WSLB is to eliminate domestic violence through compassionate intervention,
education and personal empowerment.
About Us:
Since 1977, WomenShelter of Long Beach (WSLB) has helped thousands of women, men, and
children overcome the trauma caused by domestic abuse. WSLB assists families by providing
safe housing, counseling, case management, education, health, and legal advocacy at no cost. In
order to impact future generations, WSLB also provides “Healthy Relationships” and “Teen
Dating Violence” prevention education in middle, high schools, and colleges in Southern
California.
History and Background:
WomenShelter was incorporated in 1977 by Dr. Virginia Corbett. In 1999, WSLB opened its
innovative community-based, storefront counseling and resource center to provide easily
accessible outreach services to victims of domestic violence in the community. The Domestic
Violence Resource Center (DVRC) was the first such facility in the Greater Long Beach area.
The DVRC is a place where survivors and victims can come and receive non-judgmental,
compassionate services, and work on empowering themselves. Our staff of 30 provides
thousands of services yearly as well as raise awareness for domestic violence throughout the
community. Coupled with a new and exciting managerial direction we are looking to make a big
impact in the coming years.
Throughout the agency’s history, there is one constant. WomenShelter continues to be
committed to providing compassionate, supportive services and housing to victims of domestic
violence.
The Opportunity:
The Director of Development will lead the vision and strategy for the WSLB’s development
function which is financially strong and poised for growth. The DoD will lead a team consisting
of a grant writer with executive support. The DoD will serve as a member of the Leadership
Team and is responsible for designing, implementing, and executing philanthropic programs and
initiatives directed to meet the short, intermediate, and long-term financial needs of WSLB.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the organization’s development strategies and continue to chart the organization’s
course in fund development
- Lead and manage the funding/revenue base for WSLB while focusing on a
comprehensive fund development plan that identifies prospects, donors, and community
partners to enhance the short- and long-term diversified funding base
- Implement the development plan to institute individual, corporate and planned giving
- Create and conduct presentations designed to elicit donations and contributions from
corporations, individuals and planned giving
- Collaborate with the Outreach and Education department to support a digital fundraising
strategy
- Coordinate gala and women’s golf events with the support of active committees
- Maintain and grow relationships with existing sponsors and underwriters
- Coordinate and supervise the grant writer
- Generate development materials such as grants, planned giving documents, and case
statements
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree required
- CFRE Certificate preferred
- Minimum of 4 years with non-profit fundraising experience
- Proficient with sponsorship solicitation and donor relations
- Proficient with fundraising software, DonorQuest preferred
