This Opportunity
WSP is currently initiating a search for a Lead Freight Planner for our Glastonbury, CT office.
Be involved in projects with our Freight & Logistics Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.
The primary need is in the New York, New Jersey and southern New England freight market, enhancing client contacts and growing business in the region and participating in freight projects around the country. The successful candidate will also support business development and project delivery for general transportation planning in Connecticut and southern New England.
Your Impact
- Grow and diversify the regional project portfolio – the successful candidate will bring vision, experience and understanding of clientele to develop and grow the portfolio of freight projects, and to grasp the new opportunities in a changing market.
- Network and build strong client relationships at both a technical and policy level, cultivating project opportunities and assisting with business development activities.
- Lead project teams and manage projects.
- Manage project scope, schedule and budget of assignments provided by clients.
- Prepare and assure the quality of reports, publications, maps, presentations, memos, letters and other project materials.
- Analyze data and model results for their impact on public policy, project alternatives and suitability.
- Maintain familiarity with and conduct project activities in compliance with appropriate federal, state and local regulations.
- Organize and lead public meetings, social media and project events, communicating effectively and interacting with the freight industry, state and metropolitan agencies, and diverse public audiences.
- Manage client relations and serve as contact between client and WSP related to project assignments and planning services.
- Use your ability to grow and maintain a large professional network through professional organizations and attendance at client functions.
- Maintain ongoing familiarity with trends and emerging issues related to freight and logistics and general transportation in the regional and national market, and with land use, economic development, supply chain and demographic shifts.
- Perform other duties as assigned or required by WSP USA Inc. and our clients.
- Remain current in latest transportation planning subject matter, practices, regulations, and techniques.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Transportation Planning, Urban Planning, Environmental Planning, or a related field (or equivalent experience.)
- 7 to 10 years of experience working in the transportation planning field, actively engaging in general plans, specific/master plans, zoning code updates, public involvement, and regulatory compliance for a variety of client projects relating to equitable transportation development and construction, transportation demand management, mobility planning, multimodal access, surface transportation, and funding.
- Knowledge of a) freight and logistics markets and supply chain functions; b) public planning principles and practices with an emphasis on freight and general transportation projects; and c) principles and practice of research and data collection.
- Ability to everage existing skillsets and acquire new ones pertinent to the position.
- Project management expertise - Provide a successful track record of staying within budget and schedule on projects managed.
- Understanding of relevant transportation planning issues, including multimodal planning, smart growth development, transit and freight-oriented development, non-motorized and and transit planning.
- Ability to establish partnerships with internal and external project management, client representatives, government agencies, and other organizations.
- Experience preparing planning studies and technical reports for a variety of transportation agencies.
- Good organizational skills, multi-tasking capabilities and attention to detail.
- Excellent analytical, written, oral, and visual communication skills and ability to think creatively and critically about planning issues, and to effectively deliver multiple tasks and projects on deadlines.
- Ability to work well independently and in group settings.
- Experience working with CTDOT, Connecticut COGs, and other local and regional private entities and public sector agencies.
- Ability to travel out of the immediate area and to work outside of regular work hours if needed.
- Member and active participant in industry organizations such as TRB, WTS, ULI or APA.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook; Tableau experience helpful
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree is preferred.
- Essential professional licensure/certification.- AICP is preferred.
