This Opportunity
WSP is currently initiating a search for a Safety Manager as an embedded employees in our client's Washington, DC office in a hybrid workplace model. Be involved in projects with our Transportation Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.
This position will provide ongoing, on-site support to our transportation agency client. The successful candidates will be trained on safety risk management and apply their training to train/coach/mentor operations personnel on implementing safety risk management processes.
Your Impact
- Hazard Identification: Conduct comprehensive assessments of workplaces to identify potential health hazards. Analyze the physical, chemical, biological, and ergonomic aspects of the work environment and evaluate potential risks to employee health.
- Risk Assessment: Once hazards are identified, assess the level of risk associated with each hazard; Evaluate exposure levels, duration, and frequency of exposure, and determine the likelihood and severity of adverse health effects on employees.
- Monitoring and Sampling: Utilize various monitoring techniques and equipment to measure and evaluate workplace hazards. Collect air, water, and surface samples to analyze for the presence of hazardous substances, such as chemicals, dust, gases, and biological agents.
- Data Analysis: Interpret the data collected from monitoring and sampling activities; Analyze the results to determine if exposure levels exceed regulatory standards or recommended exposure limits. Assess trends and patterns to identify potential areas of concern or improvement.
- Control Measures: Based on the findings of the assessments, develop and implement control measures to minimize or eliminate workplace hazards. This may involve recommending engineering controls (e.g., ventilation systems), administrative controls (e.g., work practices and procedures), or personal protective equipment (PPE) to reduce exposure risks.
- Training and Education: Educate employees and management about potential hazards in the workplace. Provide training on safe work practices, proper use of protective equipment, and procedures to follow in case of emergencies or exposure incidents.
- Compliance and Regulation: Stay updated with relevant regulations, guidelines, and industry best practices to ensure compliance. Develop and implement programs to meet regulatory requirements and conduct audits to assess the effectiveness of controls and adherence to standards.
- Risk Communication: Effectively communicate risks and recommendations to various stakeholders, including employees, management, and regulatory authorities. Provide clear and concise reports, presentations, and documentation to convey complex information in an understandable manner.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university in Safety, Environmental Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering, Transportation, Health, Occupational Safety or a related discipline.
- 5 years of relevant experience in operations, quality assurance, safety, and training in support of organizations within high reliability industries.
- Experience driving Safety Risk Management implementation on a day-to-day basis in partnership with management.
- Experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with Safety Risk Coordinators, senior management, regulatory oversight, and other stakeholders.
- Ability to think systematically, integrating people, processes, and tools in a manner that drives measurable outcomes for continuous improvement.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, expressing ideas effectively to a technical and non-technical audience.
- Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Safety Professional certification.
- Prior Transit Experience in the DC Region.
- Prior safety assurance and safety monitoring experience will be an asset.
- Prior safety program implementation experience with government agencies will be an asset.
This position is contingent upon award of work and client approval of candidates put forth for consideration by WSP.
This position is not eligible for relocation.
