Position Focus:
Assists the Head Men's Heavyweight Crew Coach in formulating, teaching, and coaching technical aspects of game preparation and game strategy for a Division I intercollegiate athletic program. Assists in directing competitions, practice, administrative activities, alumni relations activities, and the recruitment process for student athletes.
Essential Duties
1. Develops a varsity program within the parameters of the structure and regulations of the Ivy League, the NCAA, and the University. 2. Develops and determines the recruitment program for and final selection of athletic talent for the University. 3. Formulates and sets policies governing the strategies of play and conditioning of student-athletes and ensures such goals are met. 4. Trains and conditions student-athletes; determines the mental and physical condition of student-athletes and changes training methods if warranted. Independently determines and shapes the strategy, technical aspects, and game preparation; teaches team concepts. 5. Oversees such areas as recruitment; fund-raising; performance of athletes; contest management; and administrative details required to carry out contests. 6. Supervises and directs activities of Assistant Coaches and support personnel. 7. Manages the team budget. 8. Promotes a positive image of the athletics program in the New Haven community, at the University, for alumni, and on a national level. 9. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree and five years of experience; or the equivalent combination of education and experience and knowledge of NCAA regulations.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Knowledge of effective coaching techniques and best practices. Ability to work in a diverse work environment and ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with school administrators, parents, students and alums.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Ability to organize and manage all facets of the program including recruiting, scouting, individual instruction, budget planning, monitoring academic progress and success of student-athletes, and general day to day operations.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Ability to lead and work independently as well as within a team environment. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with student-athletes, coaches and athletic and university administration. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Required Skill/Ability 5:
Ability to work flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends. Travel required.
