YMCA International Services is a unique branch of the Y of Greater Houston and seeks to meet the needs of Houston’s significant refugee and immigrant communities. We provide comprehensive programs that focus on building human assets and fostering self-sufficiency.
As a Civics Instructor, you will recruit legal permanent residents who seek to apply for naturalization, be responsible for providing placement testing, grading assignments, referring clients to the immigration department for naturalization application processing, and conducting outreach activities. Your ultimate goal is to assist clients in passing the citizenship test with USCIS
Duties /Responsibilities
- Teaching 16-20 hours of Civics and ESL classes per week to refugees, newcomers, and other vulnerable populations.
- Impacting the lives of refugees by teaching innovative classes at a variety of locations.
- Researching, customizing, and delivering engaging and culturally appropriate Civics and ESL curricula and assessments.
- Identifying and recruiting clients and managing referrals through community outreach.
- Provide courses during the time of day when clients are available. This may include a Saturday class or evening hours.
- Meeting requirements of grant including determining client eligibility and maintaining digital databases.
- Completing required certifications and being familiar with updated resources.
- Report suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and policy violations
- Follow mandated abuse and incident reporting requirements
- Meet timelines and deadlines related to supporting systems and employee compliance. Example includes but is not limited to Kronos Workforce Ready to review and submit own time sheet.
- Participate in rotating food pantry schedule.
- Other duties as assigned.
Outcomes
The Civics & Literacy Instructor is responsible for the following:

- Recruiting, serving, and assessing minimum of 100 students per year
- Reporting documentation maintained in at least 100 applicant files.
