What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sports Assistant-Lead position at YMCA OF GREATER HOUSTON?
Position Summary:
Assist in the overall program management, supervision, planning and implementing of youth sports practices, games and/or events for participants. Provides a quality experience to children and parents that focuses on youth development, including the YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, caring, and faith. The incumbent will position themselves as a cause driven leader in this vital nonprofit organization.
Essential Functions:
- Promotes and incorporates the YMCA five core values and character development model in to all program activities.
- Facilitates sports program in accordance with the goals and policies of the YMCA.
- Supervises participants during practices and/or games, ensuring their guidance and safety.
- Properly prepares playing areas to ensure safety for all participants.
- Maintains a safe and orderly environment. Take all necessary and reasonable, precaution to protect program participants, staff, equipment and facility.
- Follows emergency procedures appropriately to ensure the safety of the participants and staff.
- Assists in YMCA annual campaign fundraising and special events.
- Communicates in a positive and effective manner with all participants, school officials, parents, community members and co-workers.
- Assists in general housekeeping of the program space. Greet and communicate with parents.
- Completes volunteer and staff evaluations during practice and games.
- Maintains a professional demeanor at all times to ensure the YMCA image and mission statement are upheld.
- Attends all staff meetings & trainings as required.
- Reports suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
- Follows mandated abuse and incident reporting requirements.
- Meets timelines and deadlines related to supporting systems and employee compliance. Example includes but are not limited to Kronos Workforce Ready for review and approval of time sheets.
- All other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- At least 18 years of age.
- Must be highly dependable.
- Must have a warm and friendly personality, while having the sensitivity to meet the needs of a diverse population
- Completion of following training requirements: Prior to first scheduled shift: Online training for Child Abuse Prevention, Work Place Harassment & Bullying, Universal Precautions, Information Security and Awareness. Within first 30 days of employment: ASHI trainings for CPR-Pro, AED, Oxygen and First Aid
- Must possess oral, auditory and written communication skills appropriate for interacting with both children and adults.
- Must have a keen desire to work with children and have the ability to relate to them in a positive, patient, sensitive and non-judgmental manner.
- Must have flexible schedule to work evenings and weekends.
- Must possess basic knowledge of sports.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) with demonstrated interested in the welfare of children; prior childcare or baby-sitting experience is preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.

HOURS
Flexible with scheduling and available to work operational hours of the YMCA, which may include day, evenings and weekends.
