Dow Bay Area YMCA Association Facts:
History: The Dow Bay Area Family YMCA is a chartered member of the YMCA of the USA and is one of the nation’s 796 Independent YMCAs. The first YMCA in Bay City was founded in 1885. In 1954 a new Bay City YMCA facility opened on Madison Avenue and it was our home for the next 57 years.
In 2006, the Board of Directors began planning for a new, family-based facility to serve all demographics in our community. With the help of generous donations from Dow Chemical, and well as thousands of private contributions, the new $13.2 million facility was built and the Dow Bay Area Family YMCA opened its doors to the public on December 27, 2011. Within the first 8 weeks, the number of people served by the YMCA doubled, and membership numbers continued to grow to a high of 8200 members in 2019 prior to the pandemic.
YMCA Membership and Facility Features Include: The YMCA currently has 2606 membership units/5609 members. The current facility opened in December 2011 and is 96,400 sq.ft. It includes the fitness floor, walking track, gym, 4 paddleball/racquetball courts, 3 pools, 6 childcare classrooms, Café Kitchen and two studios for group exercise plus a Family Center multi-purpose room. The facility has a 24/7 Fitness Workout area. The facility is in excellent condition and has ordinary capital replacement projects identified over the next five years.
Programs: The Dow Bay Area Family YMCA is highly regarded in our community as not only a high-quality fitness and childcare facility, but also as a valued nonprofit partner for providing needed services. Signature programs include childcare, free youth food program, youth sports leagues (YBA, YVA, YFFL), aquatic programming for seniors and learn-to-swim classes.
Staff: The Y has 153 W-2 employees including 18 FT (6 exempt) and 135 PT, as well as 17 independent contractors. The CEO has 6 direct reports - HR Director, Accounting Director, Facilities Director, Aquatics Director, Childcare Director, and Membership/Marketing Director ranging in tenure from 1 year to 13 years. The Sports & Wellness Director position vacancy was not filled during the pandemic and currently, those responsibilities are split across the existing staff.
Financial: The operating budget is ~ $2.9 million. As a fitness facility, the Dow Bay Area Family YMCA was required to remain closed to the public for a 6-month period in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As we reopened to the public in September 2020, the Board of Directors approved a move to a quarterly budget approval process, as YMCA management ascertained what the new "normal" would be from an operational perspective. As a result, the 2021 annual budget will be finalized in September 2021 when Q4 is approved. The Y currently has no debt. The Y has two endowment funds, the Bay Area Community Foundation Agency Endowment Fund, and the Building Endowed Trust (restricted for deferred maintenance). The PPP2 application for forgiveness will be completed in August. Employee Retention Tax Credits for 2020 and 2021 are currently in process with a local CPA firm. Approximately $1.5 million in capital replacements will likely be needed in the next 5 years.
Philanthropy and Strategic Priorities: In 2020, the “Mission: Forward” campaign was launched to support operations during the COVID crisis. The goal is $300,000 and we have raised over half of our goal as of June 2021. Our YMCA annually awards approximately $250,000 in financial assistance and scholarships for memberships, child care, and programs to kids and families in need. Current strategic goals include adding space, outreach programs, diversifying revenue, and adding youth program options.
Advantages to Area: The Great Lakes Bay region is comprised of eight counties in central Michigan that enjoy a lower cost of living than many areas of the country. We are home to eight colleges and have built an internationally recognized STEM ecosystem. Industries in chemical, manufacturing and agriculture are major contributors to our local economy. The region offers a range of culture, art and outdoor recreation and supports sports teams in hockey and baseball.
