What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sports & Recreation Director position at YMCA?
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Serves as a member of the Central YMCA Leadership Team. Directs and supervises staff, program activities and facilities to meet the needs of YMCA members and the community and fulfill YMCA objectives. Develops, organizes, and implements high quality YMCA Programs including sports leagues, adult sports and recreation programs, sports camps, and special events. Create a culture of transforming lives through friendship, achievement, and belonging.
1. One to two years related experience preferred.
2. Bachelor Degree in related field
3. Minimum age of 21
4. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community, including youth and families from inner city Youngstown.
5. Excellent interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills.
6. Listens and expresses effectively and in a way that engages, inspires, and builds commitment to the Y’s cause.
7. Computer and technology skills.
1. Serves on the Central YMCA Leadership Team and attends Team Leader in-services, meetings, and planning sessions. Participates in planning and delivery of Association and/or Branch special events, acts as Director on Duty for building coverage on assigned nights and/or weekends.
2. PROGRAM MANAGEMENT —Delivers quality programs including; planning, scheduling, delivery, data collection and improvement; monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in programs. Complete assigned reports. Creates a culture of friendship, achievement, and belonging for all programs.
3. TALENT MANAGEMENT —Recruits, hires, on-boards, trains, develops, schedules, engages, directs, and recognize staff and volunteers as needed. Ensures that staff maintain certifications; maintains certification and in-service reports. Completes Payroll. Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops methods to motivate staff. Leads and developing monthly and Quarterly Departmental In-services. Creates a culture of friendship, achievement, and belonging with employees.
4. FACILITY MANAGEMENT — Coordinates use of facilities for program activities; ensures a safe, clean, and productive environment. Assures the cleanliness of gyms and department areas and maintenance of equipment. Records and reports all needed maintenance or repairs; repair as directed.
5. RISK MANAGEMENT —Oversees daily program operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations and procedures, including Child Abuse Prevention, emergencies, medical, facility use, aquatic safety, and disciplinary situations; completes and follows up on Incident Reports.
6. FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT —Manages program budget to ensure revenue/expense and program services goals are achieved. Manages Y’s resources responsibly and sustains the Y’s non-profit business model to ensure revenue/expense and program services goals are achieved. Completes variance reports.
7. MEMBERSHIP RECRUITMENT & RETENTION — Assists in recruiting and engaging new members. Maintains retention through high quality staff, programs & services, and facility maintenance and cleanliness.
8. MEMBER SERVICE & ENGAGEMENT —Acts intentionally to connect people with the Y cause through our service and engagement principles; Welcome, Connect, Support, Invite; leads staff to create a culture of service and engagement. Creates atmosphere where friendship, achievement, and belonging are developed in programs and department.
9. MISSION & CAUSE ADVANCEMENT —Leads assigned responsibilities in YMCA fund raising activities and special events; recruits and engages volunteers.
10. MARKETING –Works with Marketing Team in the marketing and distribution of YMCA branded program information and collateral; follows all marketing procedures and policies.
11. RELATIONSHIP BUILDING — Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations. Maintains regular, clear, and concise communication within area of responsibility. Responds to all inquiries, emails, messages and complaints in timely manner.

Typical requirements within 30 days of hire include completion of: New Staff Orientation, Child Abuse Prevention, Listen First, CPR & O2 Administration, First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens, and Preventing Sexual Harassment.
Completion of YMCA program-specific certifications and maintenance of outside certification(s) for industry standards.
YMCA of Youngstown Leadership Development Program, required within first year.
YMCA Leader Certification, required within two years.
