Position Summary:
The Lead Summer Camp Counselor supervises Summer Camp Counselors and facilitates age-appropriate activities in a seasonal day camp setting. Provides a quality day camp experience that is focused on the YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring. Expected Camp dates are late May until mid-August and is a seasonal position where the employee will voluntarily separate at the conclusion of the season.
Essential Functions:
- Supervise summer camp counselors and campers participating in day camp activities.
- Ensure active compliance with all rules and regulations established for the camp and campers.
- Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with YMCA values.
- Recognize and respond to opportunities for problem-solving with summer camp counselors in the supervision of the campers.
- Encourage cooperation, teamwork, and participation among the Summer Camp Counselors.
- Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies, and assists in enforcement.
- Assess the appropriateness of campers’ behavior and administer appropriate behavior management techniques in accordance with camp rules and regulations.
- Report behavior and other problems promptly to the Assistant Summer Camp Director or Director.
- Observe and maintain daily alertness for any camper's illness and/or injury. Promptly report all health-related situations to the First Aid Specialist and the Assistant Summer Camp Director, or Director.
- Maintains positive relations with parents and other staff. Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.
- Adheres to program standards, including safety and cleanliness standards.
- Availability to work a 6-7 hr daily shift, which will either start at 6 am or finish at 6 pm, Monday-Friday, 25-40 hours per week.
- Ability to work 40 out of the 50 camp days

Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
- One year or more of college is preferred.
- Previous experience working with children preferably in a day camp setting
- Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: outdoor living, archery, boating, camping, songs/music, skits, sports, aquatics, recreational games, etc.
- Previous experience with diverse populations is preferred.
- Demonstrated professional behavior and leadership abilities.
- Proven experience in leading and counseling others.
- CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications within 30 days of hire date.
