Job Posting for Writing Center Student Tutor at Youngstown State University
Position Description: A Student Tutor in the YSU Writing Center may perform some of the duties of the Student Office Assistant, plus the following:
- Provides tutorial assistance for undergraduate and graduate students in individual tutoring sessions at one or all of the WC locations: Stambaugh Stadium, Maag Library, and Veterans Resource Center.
- Provides online assistance for distance learning students when necessary.
- Prepares for tutoring session by assessing writing samples and utilizing resource materials.
- Generates and files accurate, timely records about tutoring sessions and transcribes information for students and instructors (i.e. weekly reports, timesheets, and records of visits).
- Attends to students’ responses and adjusts strategies to meet needs of students, which may include additional appointments, referrals and communicating with instructors.
- Provides in-class tutorial assistance, including workshops, for classes when assigned.
- Assists in all phases of daily operations of Writing Center, including maintenance of rooms.
- Reviews email correspondence, including information from the WC Coordinator and other staff.
Minimum Requirements:
- Possesses excellent communication skills.
- Is familiar with APA and MLA documentation styles.
- Is familiar with relevant MS Office™ and Google Drive products.
- Demonstrates strong overall academic performance, including minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
- Has earned grades of A or B in English 1550 and 1551 (or equivalent grade).
- Possesses strong writing skills and ability to explain concepts of writing.
- Has availability to participate in training and attend monthly professional development meetings.
