What are the responsibilities and job description for the Shelter Advocate position at YWCA of Kauai?

Specific Qualifications:
1. Have at least one (1) year experience in the domestic violence or related field.
2. Have basic knowledge of, or be willing to be trained on, the dynamics of domestic violence and sexual assault, such as Trauma Informed Care.
3. Strong listening skills, good problem-solving skills, ability to manage stressful situations.
4. Able to work varied schedule.
Education & Technical Skills:
1. High School Diploma or G.E.D.
2. Current First Aid and CPR or available for First Aid and CPR training.
Function: Provide onsite assistance to Shelter residents of the Family Violence Shelter, which is a safe place for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault to stay and receive support in pursuing safety for themselves and their children. Answer calls made to the Domestic Violence and Sexual Hotline and offer callers emotional support, advocacy, and resource referrals. Provide office assistance to Shelter staff by answering phones and maintaining general office functions. Assist the Shelter Director in maintaining the Shelter’s physical appearance and maintenance, to facilitate a safe communal living environment.
Responsibilities:
1. Help residents maintain respectful and successful communal living.
2. Utilize and apply tools based in training in Trauma Informed Care, such as empathic listening, non-judgement, and de-escalation.
3. Answer hotline calls, providing support and safety planning.
4. Maintain clear documentation of client interaction.
5. Assist in meeting needs of residents.
6. Ensure safety and security of Shelter facility and population while on duty.
7. Maintain general office functions for the Shelter, including technology, office equipment, filing and organization of staff resources.
8. Answer Shelter phone line, communicating with other YWCA staff and the community.
9. Work with Shelter Director to schedule and facilitate monthly fire drills.
10. Maintenance
a. Conduct frequent walk-throughs of the Shelter to identify any hazards, upkeep, or repair needs of the facility and grounds. Notify Shelter Director and Operations Supervisor of any safety hazards immediately.
b. Coordinate and conduct weekly room checks.
c. Create and maintain resident chore list.
d. Work with Shelter Director to maintain all storage areas within the Shelter, office, garage, storage sheds, and breezeway.
11. Supplies
a. Create and maintain supply inventory system.
b. Facilitate shopping lists on a weekly basis to ensure Shelter is fully stocked.
c. Ensure the office has adequate forms/Intake packets available at all times.
d. Follow all accounting requirements including turning in receipts, using agency charge cards, etc.
12. Donations
a. Work with Crisis Support Advocate to coordinate the pickup, sorting, storing, and repurposing of Shelter donations.
b. Log donor information including contact information, items donated, and value of donation.
Additional Requirements:
1. Valid Hawai‘i Driver’s License.
