Job Title: English as a Second Language (ESL) FLSA Status: Nonexempt, Part Time
Reports To: Education Program Manager Center: East Immigrant/Refugee Services
Responsible for teaching curriculum plans to assist immigrant and refugee adults in increasing English language proficiency for daily life, education, and employment. Opportunities are also sometimes available for instruction focused on competency in English language and U.S. civics to pass the U.S. Naturalization Exam.
Principal Responsibilities and Duties
- Instruct adult immigrant and refugee students using ESL best practices to increase students’ functional language proficiency, and to reach students’ educational and employment goals.
- Maintain excellent student records including attendance, pre-, and post-tests, student/class outcomes, and submit data required by Adult Education Policies in a timely manner.
- Adhere to government grant requirements.
- Instruct immigrant and refugee legal permanent residents using civics and citizenship curriculum to increase students’ knowledge of the naturalization process to become US citizens, and promote civic and community engagement.
- Plan and implement lessons and activities appropriate to the type and level of class being taught, whether English language or Citizenship.
- Substitute for other teachers when necessary depending on availability.
- Attend required Adult Education departmental meetings as requested.
- Engage in a minimum of 15 hours of professional development during the fiscal year.
- Participate in YWCA functions as needed and requested by the Director.
- Comply with all YWCA policies and procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Ability to fluently speak, read, and write English, and another language preferred.
- Experienced in using digital platforms for virtual and in-person instruction (e.g. Smart Board, Microsoft Office and Teams, Google Classroom, Zoom, Remind, etc.).
- Strong commitment to learning, growth, and continuous improvement.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, especially as required in preparing lessons and working and interacting with diverse groups of students, internal and external contacts.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment within established guidelines.
- Must be an advocate for the mission, values, and goals of YWCA Tulsa.

- Current Oklahoma Driver’s License and current insurance verification.
Education/Experience
- Bachelor or Master’s degree required.
- Oklahoma state teacher certification or TESOL/TESL certification required.
- Two years’ teaching experience required.
- Teaching experience in Civics, US history and/or naturalization process preferred for Citizenship teaching positions.
Essential Functions:

- Position requires sitting or standing to a significant degree (sitting 2/3 of the time; standing 1/3 of the time). Use hands to finger, handle or feel over 2/3 of time. Reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, may be required under 1/3 of the time.
- Will routinely lift, carry, and otherwise move and position objects weighing up to 10 lbs.
