Zurich North America is currently looking for an experienced VP, Workers Compensation Technical Director. This position reports to the Casualty Technical Director and our preference is for the individual to be located in our Schaumburg, IL or New York NY office but we will consider one of our other Zurich offices with business travel expected.
The VP, Workers Compensation Technical Director is responsible for managing a team, and establishing Zurich North America underwriting standards, driving underwriting guidelines and appetite, defining authority levels, and monitoring underwriting actions. S/he provides insights, underwriting knowledge, and supports product development across business units.
This leader will utilize their expertise to manage, design and drive diverse multidimensional strategies for our Workers Compensation book of business. S/he will work closely with our Global Colleagues and Business Unit Heads of Underwriting to deliver portfolio quality and performance measurements, technical underwriting strategies, product management and pricing that support the achievement of the financial plans for our market-facing units. We are looking for a leader with strong influencing and leadership skills and the ability to cultivate portfolio insights and actionable underwriting plans.

Key Accountabilities:
- Lead the delivery technical underwriting services necessary to support successful Workers Compensation underwriting to drive expected financial results in North America.
- Produce results and achieve profits by providing business unit support for developing, implementing and monitoring business plans.
- Develop, negotiate and implement strategic operational plans to support BU goals; provide input to Workers Compensation underwriting strategies for all North American portfolios with Workers Compensation exposures.
- Regularly monitor opportunities and risks associated with changes in direction of external environment, looking forward 5 years.
- Determine which emerging issues (internal and external) are relevant to current and future needs and ensure strategies, programs, processes incorporate these.
- Ensure that appropriate documentation, implementation and communication of established policy, procedures and operating standards is completed for area of responsibility.
- Optimize allocation of resources and launch common products, projects, investments in Workers Compensation that meet business unit needs.
- Identify and evaluate Workers Compensation underwriting activities to identify potential risks and issues of non-compliance.
- Participate or may lead risk assessment for their area of responsibility and escalates potential issues to higher management.
- Ensures consistent and enhanced underwriting across the assigned LoB to maintain or improve underwriting performance.
- Describes, encourages and enforces a rigorous underwriting process and procedure monitoring system.
- Ensures effective leadership and management of Underwriting people resources: pursuing active talent management, driving capability development and creating a high-performance culture.
- Monitors framework for underwriting decisions e.g. authority grants, referrals, technical underwriting reviews.
- Responsible for design and implementation of rating and pricing tools and methodologies.
- Provides underwriting insight for underwriting tools.
- Develops, promotes and maintains strategic partnerships both internally and externally.
- Leads and manages the LoB underwriting strategy for product development in close collaboration with the business units and the Product Management team.
- Drives standardization and simplification of product, process and tools across the LoB wherever feasible.
- Identify Workers Compensation Technical training and develops relational Workers Compensation training framework.
- Oversees underwriting engagement with industry and regulatory bodies.
- Bachelor’s Degree and 10 or more years of experience in Property & Casualty Commercial Underwriting in the Commercial Insurance Industry AND
- Experience operating in different business cultures
- Supervisory or management experience
- Workers Compensation lines of business experience
- Advanced and in-depth knowledge of Workers Compensation lines of business
- Experience with Workers Compensation State Boards of Insurance and the National Council on Compensation Insurance
- Portfolio management, underwriting, product underwriting, product development, risk selection and pricing experience
- Strong people management experience including development of talent
- Experience building and implementing key strategies
- Strong influencing, collaboration, conflict resolution, and presentation skills
- Executive presence and the ability to interact across all levels of the organization
- Ability to manage vision and purpose, lead the organization through innovative and creative thinking
