Becoming a veterinarian typically requires six to eight years of education, including an associate‘s or bachelor‘s degree and a doctorate of veterinary medicine (DVM). While a bachelor‘s degree is recommended for better chances of getting into veterinary school, it is possible to become a veterinarian with just an associate‘s degree. Pursuing a science-based degree with classes in biology, anatomy, chemistry, and zoology can provide a strong foundation for vet school. Some schools offer specific veterinary sciences programs to prepare students for veterinary school. Once in veterinary school, the majority of the first three years are spent in the classroom, with the final year focused on hands-on, clinical work.
