Becoming a police officer is a difficult process that requires dedication, stamina, and time. The first step is to obtain a high school diploma or GED, and pursuing a college degree can make a person a more competitive applicant. After meeting eligibility requirements, a person must pass entrance exams and interviews to be considered for a spot in a police academy. Once accepted, they will undergo six months of rigorous training, including classes on the law, ethics, and physical training. After completing the academy, there is additional field training and a probationary period to ensure that the officer is prepared for the job.
