The City of White House, TN is located in both Sumner and Robertson counties and is approximately a 30-minute drive north of Nashville at Exit 108 on I-65. The White House Municipal Center is located at 105 College Street at the intersection of US Highway 31W and State Route 76. The City's normal business hours are Monday through Thursday from 7:15 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. The City of White House is named after the original White House Inn built by Richard Stone Wilks in 1829. Mr. Wilks paid $200 in November of 1828 for a parcel of land lying in both Sumner and Robertson County. On the land, he built a large two-story house along what was originally a buffalo and Native American trail that had become a well-traveled route for all travelers between Louisville, KY, and Nashville, TN. The route was referred to as the L & N Pike. Today, this route is known as Hwy 31W. An unusual characteristic of the house was that it was painted white. At that time, buildings were usually left as raw wood. The stagecoach drivers and passengers would refer to it as The White House"thus giving the City its name. So, the legacy of the White House Inn is carried on through the Citys name for all to remember its historic beginnings. The original Inn was located on Hwy 31W just north of Advanced Auto Parts located at 3201 Highway, US-31W. You can find a historic marker there near the highway. In April 1971, the City of White House became incorporated. The City currently has a Mayor-Aldermanic Charter with a City Administrator as the Chief Administrative Officer.
