Henderson County High School is participating in the Kentucky Center for Instructional Discipline (KYCID). The purpose of the program is to help improve the school culture through a positive, proactive teaching approach to discipline. In an effort to reduce the number of students tardy to class, the Red Unit has been piloting a new initiative called "Start On Time. This program allows teachers to begin class immediately without multiple interruptions from tardy students. When the tardy bell rings, teachers "SWEEP" all students in the halls to the unit office. The consequences given to students for a tardy to class are the same as they have been in the past and are stated in the Henderson County High School Student Handbook, which can be found in the student planner. Since implementing the "SWEEP" process, the Red Unit has seen a decrease in students being tardy to class. In the "SWEEP" process, when the tardy bell rings, the teachers shut their doors. All students in the hall are taken or "swept" to the office. If the student has a pass or the tardy is excused, the principal or designee will give the student an excused pass to class. If the tardy is unexcused, the principal or designee will record the student's tardy on a data sheet for that period. Tardy students will be given the appropriate consequence as stated in the student handbook. The student will then be given a pass back to class. The consequences of being tardy will be taken care of by the office instead of the classroom teacher. Some of the advantages of the program are teachers have more time to teach, classrooms have less interruptions from a stream of tardy students, and consequences for tardy students are more consistent. At the beginning of the second nine weeks we will be implementing "Start On Time" in the Blue Unit and the Green Unit. In January at the beginning of second semester, we will be implementing the process in the CTE Unit and the Central Unit. Your child's teachers will be explaining the process in your child's classes over the ...
