Very very large firm. The legal assistants not very appreciated. Management has no idea who you are. Lots of work gossip. Good pay, good benefits, 37.5 hr work week.
If you were asking me to write this review 2 years ago, pre-merger with Drinker Biddle & Reath, I would tell you to work in Operations at Faegre Baker Daniels in a heartbeat. It was a great place to work and felt like a family. Now, post-merger and at Faegre Drinker, I would tell you to run far away. The difference in cultures between the two firms forced to combine is staggering, and the Operations employees (not the attorneys, of course not them!) are the ones who suffer as a result of no clear direction from management. The workloads across teams in your department will be uneven to an unfair degree. I knew of colleagues who had little to nothing to do every week, yet I was drowning every day. Managers have no idea what's going on and are too busy to care/do anything to help you, other than tell you to find a solution. NOTE: I do think they genuinely cared about me as a person, but are not equipped for success in a managerial role at this firm. Problematic colleagues who the majority of staff can't stand, are not pleasant to work with, and flat out do not follow procedures will continue to get away with everything, even after attorneys complain. There is always some turnover in legal operations, but business development/marketing is losing employees at a RAPID pace, and if that doesn't tell you what you need to know, I don't know what does. I will note that I think they did a great job during COVID, adjusting their remote work policy and trying to keep as many employees there as possible. But now that the world is opening up and there are more options, I'd encourage you to look elsewhere for meaningful work.
May as well have been a supply closet. As far as these people were concerned, we were the Hired Help, if you catch my meaning. We couldn't even park in the parking lot. If they would have been upfront about being janitorial staff who occassionally delivered mail and picked up trash, then this wouldn't have been such a bad gig. But they obfuscated it behind 'mail room' instead of 'office janitor and gophers'.
Compensation and PTO was good and benefits weren't the worst but don't be fooled by the awesome culture, because it is not. Imagine working at a company were you have hundreds of bosses (PARTNERS WHO HAVE OWNERSHIP IN THE FIRM) and clients who all want their backsides kissed...this is Faegre Drinker. Working at a law firm is cut throat and you need to watch your back, because everyone is out to point fingers and if you aren't careful, you will be the scapegoat. If you aren't an attorney, you are worthless as you don't bring the money in. They also try to tell you the job is 35-37.5 hours a week, depending on which legacy firm you work for but if you are exempt, expect to work 60+ hours a week, including weekends. IT systems are prehistoric and they still haven't dealt with issues from their last merger in 2012 and then they did another one in 2020 without thinking things through first. I am filled with dread each morning when my alarm goes off. You've been warned.
Interesting work variety - trademark as well as chemical and aviation related patent pproduction. Left Chicago for better quality of life without sp much commuting.
Decent pay. Great benefits. Human Resources doesn’t seem to care about retaining good employees. Stable place to work through out COVID. Not a lot of turnover.
All positions have challenges, you just need to figure out the best approach to resolve them. Tbeco.pany does lack communication and filling in all employees of certain aspects.
Only lawyers are valued and everyone else is invisible. Government and big business law firm. They help take down America. Human Resources aren't human. Cold place. Competitive atmosphere. Vicious team worker taking and selling drugs from the office - no oversight or management. Robotic. Terrible place.
