The mission of The Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation is to engage medical students and young investigators in a personalized research experience with preeminent cardiovascular scientists, and to foster the next generation of leaders in the field. Incorporated in Maryland in 1981, The Stanley J. Sarnoff Endowment for Cardiovascular Science, Inc. operates as a public charity under the Internal Revenue Code. As provided in its corporate charter, the Endowment "is organized, should be operated for the exclusive benefit of, and shall be controlled by," publicly supported organizations [PSOs] that are "actively engaged in developing, encouraging and maintaining a cardiovascular science program." The Endowment's controlling PSOs have included The Johns Hopkins University, The Mount Sinai Medical Center, The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, Columbia University, and Duke University Medical Center. Many other medical institutions participate as sponsors of the applicants for the Foundation's Fellowships and Scholar awards, and as host institutions, where the Fellows and Scholars spend their research years. All medical schools located within the United States are eligible to sponsor applicants and to host Fellows and Scholars for their research experience. What makes the Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation's programs unique among other research programs is their investment in medical students and physicians-in-training to encourage them to pursue a career in cardiovascular research and in supporting their career development. This investment is accomplished by the development of a mentoring relationship between the Fellow and the Preceptor in the laboratory during the Fellowship year; the guidance offered by the pairing of the Fellow with a member of the Foundation's Scientific Committee during the Fellowship year; and the opportunities afforded the Fellows throughout the research year and each year afterward to interact with other Fellows, Scholars, and Scientific Committee ...
