    Job Description:
    An Academic Advisor provides holistic advising services for students at Minnesota State Mankato. Working with both current and prospective students, the Academic Advisor communicates information regarding academic programs, policies and procedures; assists students in developing educational goals and identifying and addressing academic barriers to success. The Academic advisor guides students to utilize tools and resources to understand their Interests, abilities, strengths and limitations and to use that understanding to develop plans of study which support their academic and career goals. The Academic Advisor helps students monitor academic progression and provides proactive outreach, developmental guidance and referrals as needed to overcome obstacles and support student success.

    Responsibilities and Results:
    • Provide academic advising services to students pursuing programs at Minnesota State University, Mankato.




    • Assist with advising and registration for students assigned to particular advising units (new transfer & no degree as needed.)

    • Assist students experiencing barriers to academic success to develop individual plans and access supports for performance improvement.

    • Assist in coordinating and delivering various outreach efforts supporting student success.

    • Organize and lead advising sessions for individuals and groups.

    • Participate in recruitment, retention and student success events and initiatives.

    • Other duties as assigned that support student success.

    Required Qualifications:
    • Masters degree (conferred by the time the position begins) and one (1) year of academic and/or student support experience in higher education.




    OR
    • Bachelors degree and three (3) years of experience in higher education in academic and/or student support areas.

    • Demonstrated commitment to students with diverse backgrounds including, but not limited to, students of color, LGBTQ students, first generation students, students with disabilities, and/or international students.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment.




    • Masters degree in counseling, student development, educational leadership or education administration preferred.

    • Professional academic advising experience.

    • Demonstrated commitment to supporting students and their success.

    • Communication and interpersonal skills necessary for advising and coaching students through the use of technology, and in one-on-one, small group and large group settings.

    • Evidence of successful experience working with a wide variety of student support services.

    • Demonstrated success providing developmental and proactive advising services to students in transition.

    • Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills.

    • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn new information and interpret it with attention to detail and accuracy.

    • Demonstrated flexible, professional, student-friendly demeanor needed to build positive relationships with students and campus partners.

    • Evidence of successful experience working both collaboratively and independently to achieve goals.

    • Experience with various computer applications, web technology, student records, basic software, and other technologies used in the provision of effective academic advising services.

    Other Requirements:
    Work safely at all times, which includes but is not limited to, participating and completing all required safety trainings, as well as performing all job tasks in accordance with Minnesota State University, Mankato policies and procedures utilizing appropriate tools, equipment and personal protective equipment.

    Based on the essential functions of this position, MMB Policy #1422, and University policies relating to flexible work, this position is eligible for the following work mode:
    • Case by Case/Situational Telework: A position that may include a temporary reassignment or work outside the permanent/principal work location to meet short-term needs up to 10% of the time.
