Academic Advisor advises university/college students in course and major selection, requirements for selected area of concentration, and post-college plans. Assists students in setting academic goals, course planning and career development. Being an Academic Advisor may work with individual students or groups. Requires a bachelor's degree in counseling or related field or its equivalent. Additionally, Academic Advisor typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Academic Advisor gains exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function. Occasionally directed in several aspects of the work. Serving within the Academic Advising Department which supports all students in 9th-11th grades, an Academic Advisor will support students and all programmatic areas that fall within the Academic Advising program. Academic Advising prepares students for College Advising conversations that begin in the latter part of 11th grade.
Key responsibilities include:
Teaching
Teach 8-week Freshman Study Strategies course & Sophomore Workshop. Familiarity with YouScience Aptitude Assessment is a plus.
Student Advising
Track student academic progress and identify academic performance trends (both positive and negative)
Conduct Root Cause Analysis for performance deficiencies & coach executive functioning skills
Identify and coordinate exploration and enrichment opportunities for students
Demonstrate knowledge of developing a strategic student profile for college applications
Interface with parents, teachers and school counselor regarding student academic progress
Academic Advising Website & Communications
Develop, update and maintain AA website which includes pages for CETs, External Learning Opportunities, Peer Tutoring and Study Strategies (video tutorials)
Career Exploration Trip Program (CET)
Assist in scheduling, coordinating and chaperoning various Career Exploration Trips
Facilitate student follow up conversations after each CET
Peer Tutoring Program
Work w/ PTC Coordinator to run our Peer Tutoring program
Freshmen Orientation
Support in all aspects of freshmen orientation program
QUALIFICATIONS: An applicant for this position must be a self-starter and team player who has experience working with teenagers and is comfortable communicating with parents. An applicant must also be skilled at multitasking with efficient time management, managing multiple priorities, attention to detail & processes and have excellent written and verbal communication skills. 5 years work experience outside of education, teaching and/or expertise in executive functioning coaching are a plus. Strong knowledge of Google Drive applications, computer skills and bachelor’s degree is required.
