    Job Description:

    The First Year Advising Center (FYAC) is seeking a 12-month academic advisor who are committed to developmental academic advising and assisting first time freshmen students in their transition to college. The advisor reports to the FYAC Director. These positions professionally represent the university and serves as academic advisors for a grant the university has received for the Rural Postsecondary and Economic Development (RPED) program to promote success for rural students.

    RESPONSIBILITIES: Academic advising is the primary responsibility of this position. The individual will be expected to maintain an academic advising caseload of first year freshmen in a variety of majors and those that are still exploring their options. Academic Advisors assist students with both academic and personal transition needs including navigating campus processes, financial aid, campus involvement, and resource use. The caseload will consist of students entering WIU through our general admission program and students who enter through our Reach program (alternative admission). Academic advisors must attend and participate in all registration and orientation events and various events targeting students academic success. Additional responsibilities include coordinating outreach activities for academic support initiatives and the identification of populations that would benefit from those services

    Requirements:

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
    • Applicants must also have experience performing duties related to guiding students in a higher education setting with academic and personal transition needs through advising or coaching on admissions, academic degree progress and completion, financial aid, campus involvement, resource use, and/or further career or educational goals.
    • The candidate must have experience working with emerging student populations and experience developing rapport and providing an inclusive environment when working with students, parents and colleagues.
    • The applicant must have experience guiding students through college/university level academic policies and regulations and working within an information technologies system.
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • A Master's Degree from an accredited institution in College Student Personal, Psychology, Counseling, or from another degree program that specializes in human growth and development.
    • Experience guiding students through WIU's academic policies and regulations and working within an information technologies system is highly preferred.
    For a degree to be considered, it must be conferred from a regionally accredited degree-granting institution of higher education (or equivalent from an international accrediting body). Unless otherwise stated, the degree must be "in hand" at the time of application.

    WIU Intercollegiate Athletics

    The University's athletics program, based on the Macomb campus, sponsors 17 NCAA Division I intercollegiate men's and women's varsity sports. Football competes in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision through the Missouri Valley Football Conference; all other varsity sports compete at the Division I level through The Summit League.
