    Job Summary:

    Reporting to the Project Director for the Ho'oko Project, the Academic Coach is the first line of support in the enhanced, comprehensive programming provided to project students. The Academic Coach will provide regular, scheduled academic consultations to help students develop personalized academic plans. These consultations will be guided by project toolkits, checklists and curricula. The Academic Coach will also be available to assist students in navigating personal, academic, and professional challenges that arise. If needed, they will refer students to appropriate support offices (i.e., Accessibility, Counseling and Behavioral Health, Tutoring, etc.). The Academic Coach also serves as a resource for students regarding their degree requirements, course selection and registration, and other university procedures.

    The Academic Coach will participate in the Ho'oko Project’s ongoing case management for project students in collaboration with other project staff, tracking progress toward student’s educational goals using EAB Navigate and other university systems. This data will allow for the project and the university to engage in timely interventions and offer additional supports for students when needed. The Academic Coach will be a part of the team that develops and refines project materials (i.e., toolkits, curricula, guides etc.) for internal staff training, student meeting and workshop supports, and university staff and faculty training.

    Qualifications:

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university
    • Three years’ experience working with in academic support services, counseling, training, customer service, or related field
    • One year of professional work experience as an academic advisor, counselor, or related role
    Desired Qualifications:
    • Master’s Degree with a specialization in student services, counseling, education, or related field
    • Three years of professional work experience providing academic advising, coaching or counseling in a post-secondary setting
    • Previous experience working with a student information system (e.g., Ellucian Banner and Degree Works)
    • Knowledge of or experience with academic support strategies for various populations of students, including students from under-resourced and under-represented communities
    Other Qualifications:
    • Knowledge of best practices in academic coaching, advising, retention, and student success
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize multiple competing tasks and demands
    • Demonstrated ability to establish and develop productive and collegial relationships, collaboration, and communication with university constituencies (i.e. staff, faculty, students, etc.) and build effective teams as needed
    • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
    • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship and relocation allowance is not available for this position
    • Must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with the Protection of Minors policy
    • Able to work all shifts and extended hours
    • Able to meet to work obligations that may require work during HPU’s winter break, if necessary
    • Successful candidate will be able to utilize excellent time and stress management skills

    Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:
    1. Direct Student Support – Academic Coaching (65%)
    • Works directly with project students to create success plans tailored to their individual needs, both academic and personal, utilizing Ho?ok? student meeting guides and collaborating with other Ho?ok? staff
    • Supports project students who are underperforming academically or at risk of underperforming academically (e.g., students identified by early warning flags, faculty and staff reports, and/or academic probation) by creating academic intervention plans, referring to appropriate campus resources and tracking their progress
    • Assists students in the development of time management, problem solving, and relational skills that can aid in navigating academic and personal challenges
    • Advises students about general education and degree requirements, general academic policies and procedures related to course selection and registration, transfer credits, and graduation
    • Prepares and processes Electronic General Petitions for course substitutions and residency waivers
    • Utilizes and familiarizes students with technology tools and other available resources (e.g., EAB Navigate/Banner, Degree Works, Academic Catalog, Blackboard) to assist students in degree planning, time management, and successful completion of coursework
    • Advises students about academic suspension appeal policies and procedures
    • Prepares block registration and linked courses for students in coordination with the Registrar’s office

    2. Indirect Student Support - Case Management (20%)
    • Documents attendance, meeting records, and other required data on program students in EAB Navigate and other university reporting systems
    • Collaborates with other project staff on specific student interventions, as needed
    • Collaborates with other university student support services (i.e., Accessibility, Counseling and Behavioral Health, Tutoring, etc.) as needed to further the goal of providing wraparound student success services, increasing retention, timely progress to degree, and overall academic success
    3. Indirect Student Support - Program Development and Assessment (10%)
    • Collaborates with Project Director, Ho?ok? project staff and affiliated faculty/staff to develop appropriate guides, program seminars/workshops, and other success support materials for program students
    • Works with the Project Director and other Ho?ok? Project staff to develop and implement trainings (i.e., seminars, workshops, etc.) for affiliated professional staff, faculty and other university partners
    • Works with the Project Director and other project staff to implement program assessments, continuous improvement plans and reporting as required by the Ho?ok? Project grant
    4. Performs other related duties as assigned (5%)
    • Attends regular staff meetings and other events related to program students
    • Attends regular weekly meetings with Academic Advising team
    • Actively participates as an effective member of team by completing assigned duties, accepting additional assignments or reassignments
    • Assists with seasonal peaks
    • Perform other duties, as assigned
