Albers Marcovina Vista Gardens (AMVG) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that operates and maintains the Albers Marcovina Vista Gardens Botanical Garden in Bremerton, WA that models sustainable landscapes, offers tours, workshops, educational and research opportunities to the greater Puget Sound community. The 4-acre garden has 15 distinct areas, with a living collection of over a thousand different, aesthetically arranged plants. Native, climate-adapted, and rare plants provide four season color and interest with landscape art strategically placed throughout.
Executive Director Position
The Executive Director executes the AMVG Strategic Plans and Goals established by the Board of Directors by implementing Financial, Marketing, and Programming actions to achieve the short- and long-term financial viability of AMVG. The Executive Director is also the lead organizational liaison to the Board of Directors and collaborates with the Board to develop short- and long-term goals aligned with the strategic plan including fundraising for the Endowment to support the day-to-day operational funds. This is an initial part-time position transitioning to full-time requiring some evening and weekend activities, including participation in all AMVG Board meetings and fundraising events. The Executive Director reports to the AMVG Foundation Board, with the President of the Board as the direct supervisor.
Primary Responsibilities
Lead strategic direction efforts, financial management including revenue development and fund raising, community/public relations, and initiatives to increase the awareness of the garden.
Lead Strategic Direction Initiative
· Provide strategic and practical leadership to build revenue streams for financial stability and operations, redefine, and expand garden programming (tours, workshops, seminars, partner events, school field trips, etc.), create partnerships and opportunities with education institutions.
· Collaborate with Foundation Board to develop a strategic plan aligned to the mission and vision, develop short- and long-term goals for the major strategic plan components, develop and prioritize annual objectives (tasks and initiatives) and coordinate their implementation. Regularly report progress to the Board.
Financial Management (includes Revenue Development, Fund Raising)
· Recommend methods to achieve financial goals through revenue development. Implement Board- approved major development programs to fund operations and long-term organization growth and sustainability.
· Lead annual budget development process. Recommend annual budget and present to Foundation Treasurer for AMVG Board approval. Collaborates with Treasurer regarding income and expense recording and reporting.
· Ensure AMVG complies with all State and Federal laws, IRS regulations, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Assist with annual audit and filing of annual 990 report.
Community/Public Relations, Marketing
· Direct the solicitation and stewardship of partners, donors, sponsors. Articulate AMVG vision and strategic future to volunteers, donors, partners, general community and stakeholders.
· Maintain consistent communication with donor community and stakeholders regarding current and future events and programming initiatives.
· Implement fundraising communications, campaigns, and donor events. Increase community visibility with comprehensive marketing programs and community engagement. Promote AMVG programs locally, regionally, and nationally as a recognized point of reference for sustainable gardens and horticulture.
· Be the face of the Garden as an ambassador to and for the community, donors, local horticultural organizations, and other non-profits, volunteers, and partners. Cultivate strong positive working relationships with the community, local government, and State representatives.
· Design and execute comprehensive marketing programs.
· Implement strategies to enroll volunteers and manage their activities.
· Develop a plan to update AMVG web site content and implement regular updates/postings according to a weekly/monthly calendar. Revitalize social media presence.
Administration/Organizational Leadership
· Lead daily administrative operations. Establish systems and processes to manage the financial aspects of the foundation (revenue, bookkeeping, reporting), implement programs for generation of income/revenue, devise and manage marketing programs. Document systems and process to manage the curated collection database.
Board Relations
· Consult andcollaborate with Foundation Board Members regarding achieving the strategic plan, horticultural operations and garden management. Draft policies for Board approval, review existing policies annually and recommend changes to the Board.
· Engage Board Members in their roles in supporting AMVG strategies for success. Communicate effectively with Board Members, providing timely and accurate information necessary for informed decisions and board function.
· Assist Board with identifying and recruiting new Board Members. Collaborate with Board President and Executive Committee in creating processes and training to maintain a highly functional Board.
Education and Requirements
· Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Business, Public Administration, Marketing. Strong organizational skills including planning, program development, task execution and completion. Excellent leadership, oral and written communication, problem-solving skills, and ability to establish relationships in the community.
Required Experience
· At least five years in non-profit leadership roles in executive leadership position (i.e., Executive Director, Philanthropy Director, or Development Director).
· At least five years development experience, specifically with major donors and sponsors.
· Demonstrated experience in organizing and building partnerships with diverse communities and potential partner organizations in public and private sectors. Demonstrated success in initiating and executing large scale non-profit fundraising.
· Demonstrated success with growing revenue in a non-profit organization (i.e., via major gifts, earned revenue, sponsorships, foundation grants, other initiatives).
· Demonstrated competency working with a Board of Directors to develop strategic plans, manage and implement them. Demonstrated experience aligning organization activities and processes to the mission, overseeing implementation and measuring effectiveness.
· Record of accomplishment in conceptualizing, developing, executing new programs and events that garner greater community awareness and reputation growth. Experience executing/guiding marketing programs to achieve organization goal for community awareness and fundraising.
· Experience with public speaking.
· Valid WA state driver’s license.
Desired Experience
· Proficiency with personal computer (ability to troubleshoot basic issues) and software applications including Microsoft Office, Google Drive/Docs, publishing tools (i.e., Microsoft Publisher, Adobe Acrobat/Creative Suite), social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram specifically), webpage content editing, database user/administrator, ecommerce payment processing tools (Strip, PayPal, Square, etc.), accounting tools (QuickBooks).
