Actuary utilizes statistical analysis and modeling to assess and manage risk and estimate financial outcomes. Compiles, prepares, and analyzes data to develop statistical models, probability tables, and actuarial studies and evaluate the likelihood and financial impact of various risks. Being an Actuary assists with product design and development by analyzing risk groups and calculating appropriate insurance rates, premium levels, and rating systems and structures. Records and tracks accruals, claims, and settlements and prepares documents for input into regulatory filings, financial budgets, forecasts, and other financial projections. Additionally, Actuary applies knowledge of mathematics, probability, statistics, principles of finance and business to calculations in life, health, social, and casualty insurance, annuities, and pensions. Requires a bachelor's degree. Must be currently pursuing the designation of ASA (Associate) in the Society of Actuaries. Typically reports to a manager. The Actuary work is closely managed. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role. To be an Actuary typically requires 0-2 years of related experience. (Copyright 2024 Salary.com)

  • This vacancy is located in the Office of Financial Solvency and is an Unclassified position.  Depending on experience, annual salary is $110,000 - $150,000.

    Join a dynamic actuarial team within a traditional and supportive work environment.
    The position will support all Life and Health insurance business, with a strong preference to candidates who can provide Life Insurance expertise. Project work and investigative studies will include a combination of pricing, reserving, and other topics. Candidates who are willing to adapt to both conventional and unconventional roles as the need arises are encouraged to apply.
    Position will be structured to fit the experience level of the candidate.
    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
    • Review Life and Health annual statement submissions for actuarial compliance and company solvency. 
    • Review Long-Term care and Medicare Supplement rate increase filings and recommend approval or denial of requested rate increase. 
    • Provide actuarial support to the Louisiana State Legislation.
    • Provide other actuarial support as needed to the financial analysts, financial examiners and other Department staff as needed. 
    Experience/Skills Required:
    • Desire to impact the insurance industry in a meaningful way, stay advised of industry trends, and keep current on new techniques.
    • Exchanges ideas and conveys complex information clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing, to other actuaries and non-actuaries alike.
    • Strong analytic skills with solid understanding of actuarial techniques, standards, and assumptions for Life Insurance and Health Insurance pricing and reserving. 
    • Ability to work on multiple projects and prioritize work without extensive direction from supervisor.
    • Knowledge of:
      • Life and Health statutory reserves, Statement of Actuarial Opinion and Actuarial Memorandum.
      • Actuarial structure of Long-Term Care and Medicare Supplement ratemaking. 
      • Life and Health insurance operations.
      • Current activity of the Life and Health actuarial committees of the NAIC. 
      • Familiarity with, and the ability to utilize, various business software applications.
    • FSA or ASA, and be a member in good standing with the Society of Actuaries. Near-ASA will be considered for a more junior role.
    • 5 years or more Life Insurance actuarial experience. Compensation will reflect the experience level of the candidate.
