Advertising Sales Director directs and develops the strategy, plans, and tactics required to create advertising concepts and campaigns that deliver results and meet organizational objectives. Oversees the budget, expenditures, and resource allocation for all advertising campaigns. Being an Advertising Sales Director identifies media channels and directs the placement of all advertisements and the development of promotional materials. Ensures consistent and effective branding and messaging in all forms of advertisements. Additionally, Advertising Sales Director uses metrics and data analytics to measure campaign effectiveness and assess return on investment. Fosters innovation of new advertising methods and initiatives using advertising industry experience and competitive intelligence. Requires a bachelor's degree in marketing, advertising or equivalent. Typically reports to top management. The Advertising Sales Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be an Advertising Sales Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function.   • The Director of Advertising manages the performance of their assigned sales team to meet revenue goals and works collaboratively across the organization to ensure successful executions of advertising campaigns and sales results for special initiatives. Responsible for developing new revenue producing plans, both short and long term, that contribute to achieving goals.


    • Achieve revenue goals for digital products, sponsorships/events, print products and other initiatives.
    • Hire, train, coach, and motivate the sale team. Serve as a valued contributor of ideas, strategies, and tactics towards the successful completion of department revenue, goals and objectives.
    • Set monthly sales goals and assist in building annual revenue and expense budget for the assigned team. Ability to forecast trends among accounts or categories of business, and adjust as needed due to changing market conditions to ensure overall budget is achieved.
    • Inculcate rating discipline among the sales team to improve profitability and strive to reduce credits and adjustments from them due to errors and miscommunications with customers.
    • Ensure sales team has the necessary information to effectively and efficiently sell all publications and products.
    • Clearly communicate sales and marketing strategies to staff members so that all are well informed.
    • Establish and maintain positive business relationships with industry influencers, key strategic partners, and advertisers.
    • Collaborate with other departments to achieve common business goals.
    • Resolve issues with dissatisfied customers, mediate staff conflicts and trouble shoot internal problems with other business units, i.e., finance, creative services, pre-press, etc.
    • Responsible for mid-year and year end performance reviews for all direct reports as well as ongoing feedback on performance.
    • Professionally represent the organization at community/civic and business networking functions.
    • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge and practice of sales techniques and knowledge of financial principles.
    • Team player and collaborator; ability to lead a team to drive results, produce exceptional work and meet/exceed goals.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Demonstrated negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
    • Use available technology to support sales efforts.
    • Fluent in digital media.

    Education/Experience:


    A college degree in business, advertising or marketing, or a related field, plus a minimum of 5 years of related experience in sales and management, is preferred.

    Supervisory Responsibility:


    This position has several sales direct reports. Sets performance expectations as part of the performance and goal-setting process; provides clear, consistent feedback on employee performance, including conducting the mid-year and annual performance review; clearly defines roles and responsibilities of the team members, coaches and leads the team to meet goals and deadlines, and drives results.
