    Position Summary:

    Under general direction, responsible for the compilation of pre-existing Tohono O'odham recorded media as well as originating programming which promotes knowledge of Tohono O'odham Culture and use of the Tohono O'odham Language and is responsible or delegates the responsibility to translate regularly scheduled news programs.

    The work is normally reviewed upon completion to ensure compliance with general organization/department goals, policies and procedures. Major work activities are covered by procedures or guidelines permitting flexibility in selecting methods to utilize and procedures to follow, determination of work priorities, and the planning and coordination of projects.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Reviews and recommends programming policies, procedures, systems and forms designed to improve cultural programming.
    • Provides leadership and training to student D.Js; assist students with announcements, editing material, review and prepare material to air.
    • Responsible for the translation of the daily news reports into Tohono O'odham Language.
    • Originates programming emphasizing Tohono O'odham Himdag and Culture.
    • Assists in preparing annual budget and budget modifications regarding KOHN programming.
    • Ensures compliance with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations and the standards set by management.
    • Maintains individual and departmental calendars, appointments, events; coordinates and arranges meetings as required.
    • Establishes and approves materials broadcast on radio stations.
    • Evaluates materials prior to broadcast for accuracy, quality and adherence to federal guidelines; maintains quality control of broadcast material.
    • Monitors broadcast traffic and logging activities and makes improvements when necessary to enhance programming format.
    • Schedules local promotional material and public service announcements.
    • Previews and screens local and regional program sources for possible station use and participates in purchase of programs.
    • Participates in the development of station goals, policies and procedures.
    • Analyzes the programming needs of the listening public and creates programs to serve needs; assigns staff producers to create programs.
    • Serves as producer/host of various music and news or other information programming as assigned.
    • Represents the station in responding to audience programming inquiries. Attends all regular management meetings.
    • Represents KOHN in a positive and professional manner.
    • Establishes, posts, and keeps reasonable office hours.
    • Creates correspondence, memos, minutes, agendas or reports from drafts, recordings, or verbal instruction.
    • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by conducting research, attending seminars, educational workshops, classes and conferences; reviewing professional publications; establishing networks; participating in professional societies; conferring with representatives of contracting agencies and related organizations.
    • Reports directly to the General Manager or designee.
    • Performs other job related duties as assigned and contributes to a team effort.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
    • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
    • Knowledge of journalistic writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
    • Knowledge of production techniques, procedures and standards.
    • Knowledge of broadcast rules, regulations and guidelines.
    • Knowledge of programming techniques, procedures and standards.
    • Knowledge of the program format subject area.
    • Skill in providing superior customer service to internal and external customers.
    • Skill in effective leadership and supervision.
    • Skill in communication, presentation and program planning.
    • Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules including holidays.
    • Ability to learn how to operate studio equipment, radio automation systems, and database software programs.
    • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
    • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
    • Ability to exercise independent judgment in the exercise of job responsibilities.
    • Ability to plan, assign, and review the work of assigned personnel and volunteers.
    • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
    • Ability to effectively translate to and from Tohono O'odham to English.
    • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees, and the general public.
    • Ability to maintain privileged confidential information.
    • Ability to travel within the interior/exterior boundaries of the Tohono O'odham Nation.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's Degree in Broadcasting or closely related field, and one year work experience in program evaluation, acquisition and scheduling for radio or television, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.
    • One year of supervisory experience.

    Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:

    • Demonstrated knowledge of Tohono O'odham Himdag.
    • Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record.
    • May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license, (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
    • If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
    • Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham Language and English as a condition of employment.
